What’s the Deal with the TV Coverage?
Last night, Southern Belle was all excited to see the Bryan Brothers play the 2014 Wimbledon champs, Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil. After all, this was the #1 doubles team in the world, a pair of twin brothers who have won more titles than any other doubles pairing in the Open Era, facing off against two young guns who are making noise on the men’s tour in both singles and doubles.
With all the hoopla yesterday over Bernie Tomic pulling out of his quarterfinal match versus World #1 Novak Djokovic due to a back injury – or was it his ailing wisdom tooth or the eye pain he was experiencing? – the Indian Wells organizers had to do some quick rearranging, trying to appease ticket holders in both Stadium 1 and Stadium 2. It was finally announced that the Bryan’s would be the premier Night Session match alongside the women’s doubles matchup of Sania Mirza and recently-unretired Martina Hingis versus Sam Stosur and Lisa Raymond. Surely, ticket holders would be okay with that.
Anyway, back to the TV coverage . . . Southern Belle returned home late last night, all excited to watch the doubles on ESPN2. Instead, she turned on the television to find the women’s singles quarterfinal between Lisicki and Pennetta in the beginning of its 3rd set. Okay, some good singles would be fun to watch, too. At the end of the match, SB figured there would be a short break as tourney operations folks switched out the nets (gotta have the proper logos showing!), then she could settle in for some amazing doubles.
Sadly, ESPN2 decided to replay Serena’s match from the night before. What????? Where were the dubs????
Southern Belle had to wait until this morning to look online at the results. From the scorelines, it looks like all those in TV Land missed two awesome dubs matches. Too bad, so sad. C’mon, ESPN2, we wanna see LIVE matches as they’re happening, not replays from the day before. Here’s hoping the rest of the weekend’s coverage includes both SINGLES and DOUBLES!
