Captain Jim Courier
On John saying he let the team down…
I don’t feel that way. We win and lose as a team. John came out and gave everything he had. He came up a little short in two matches. Today’s match was not as long, but it was close. He played the tennis he needs to always play today. If he played that tennis on Friday, we might still be in a live match or maybe not. But, I would have felt better about our chances if he played a little more aggressively like he did today.
On where the U.S. team goes from here…
Our team changes. You always try to make some adjustments and go forward. We play again in September, so I have time to assess everything. It takes time to process defeats like this and try to figure out what you can learn from it and improve going forward.
On Leon Smith as a Davis Cup Captain…
I have great respect for Leon. The proof is in the pudding. When you get someone like James Ward to play the way he does in these ties, you have to give Leon some credit for the results.
On the crowd…
I don’t think the crowd impacted our team much. I think the crowd was very good, very fair. It was very loud, but they were respectful. It is a crowd you like to play for when you are on the road.
On Great Britain’s chances on winning the Davis Cup this year…
When you have a great champion like Andy, against most teams, they should feel like they are up 2-0 going in. The way their doubles team played was impressive. Bob and Mike played unbelievably well yesterday and they were pushed to the wire. It only takes three to win.
The similarities in being a captain and a former player…
It feels very similar. I am in the battle with the guys. I don’t get to hit a shot, but I chat with them between points. It is painful. If is isn’t painful, I shouldn’t be the captain.
John Isner
On his break chances in the first set…
If I could have won that first set, I think the match would have been different. I wasn’t concise enough. I had chances, but I didn’t come up with the goods.
On Murray winning the first set…
When Andy won that first set, he became more comfortable. When someone as good as him becomes comfortable, it gets tough. That is why he is one of the best.
On his performance in this tie…
This one is on me. My teammates may say otherwise, but if you look at the match-up on paper, I lost on Friday and put us in a huge hole. It is disappointing for me. There are not many people that could beat Andy and I certainly tried my best and was close. But on Friday, my match hurt us a lot.
Andy Murray
On his reaction to the weekend…
This is a deserved win. The attitude of everyone was excellent. Everyone fought extremely hard, especially when we were behind in the matches, no one gave up. Every person played extremely hard.
It was huge momentum for us in winning James’ match. We were also so close yesterday to winning 3-0, so I felt some pressure today to close it out. The way John approached the match made it difficult.
