Four top 10 players will be in action during the Davis Cup first round: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, and Milos Raonic. Murray and Raonic are a part of rematches between teams who also faced each other in last year’s opening round of the World Cup.
Murray and Great Britain went on the road to San Diego, Calif. and beat the United States 3-1 last season. This time around the British side has home-court advantage in Glasgow, Scotland. Team USA, though, has John Isner back on board after missing him against Great Britain in 2014.
“It’s nice obviously,” Murray said of playing in Scotland. “I’ve spent a bit of time here in the last few years but I haven’t played any matches. The tickets sold very quickly so I imagine the crowd is going to be very passionate. They will get right behind the team. I’m looking forward to it.”
Canada has to be looking forward to the presence of its top two players–Raonic and Vasek Pospisil–for another date with Japan. Both men missed last year’s tie and the Japanese team coasted into the quarterfinals.
Serbia lifted the Davis Cup trophy in 2010 and looks poised to make another run with Novak Djokovic participating and a rejuvenated Viktor Troicki in outstanding form. With home-court advantage against a Croatian squad that does not have reigning U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic at its disposal, the Serbs are heavy favorites to take care of business in Kraljevo.
“We are very excited to be here and the hospitality of the people here has been overwhelming,” Djokovic assured. “Our hearts are filled with joy after seeing people from all over the region queue up for tickets to see us in action. It’s not a big venue but we know that it will be jam-packed and able to generate a fantastic atmosphere.”
“We decided to organize the tie in Kraljevo because this city deserves an event of this stature and it’s also a special experience for me because I have played a Davis Cup tie outside Belgrade only once in my life.”
