GREAT BRITAIN DAVIS CUP TEAM ANNOUNCED

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has today confirmed the team to contest the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group tie against the USA that will take place from 6-8 March 2015 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

The Aegon GB Davis Cup Team, which will be led by Captain Leon Smith, will comprise of:

· Andy Murray

· James Ward

· Jamie Murray

· Dominic Inglot

Kyle Edmund will also travel to Glasgow as the reserve player.

Commenting on the selections, Leon Smith said: “From a selection point of view we’ve been able to choose our strongest possible team which is of course spearheaded by Andy Murray who is significantly ahead of where he was 12 months ago. The tie will be a huge deal for him personally as he returns to play in Scotland for the first time since winning Wimbledon in 2013. In James Ward we have somebody who has already proven himself against the US Davis Cup team, and I’d back him again to put in another excellent performance after some consistent recent form has seen him on the verge of cracking the top 100 for the first time. I’ve selected our top two doubles players in Jamie and Dom, and again they’ve showed real consistency this year to earn their place in the team. As a group, all the guys deserve this opportunity and I know we’re all excited to get together in Glasgow and get the tie underway.”

James Ward who enjoyed an unforgettable five sets victory over Sam Querrey in the Great Britain versus USA tie last year said: “I’m really excited to have been selected for the Davis Cup team. We have this great team spirit and it always brings out the best in us and I’m hoping I’ll be able to enjoy a repeat performance of my match last year. I have no doubt it will be a great tie. We’ve played in Glasgow a few times and the fans there always support us well, but this is an entirely different level now we’re in the World Group and I can’t wait to get to Glasgow and get started.”

Britain’s top ranked doubles player Jamie Murray joins the team for the first time since 2011 following an impressive run of form which has seen him win the ATP doubles title in Brisbane and reach the final of Rotterdam. Ahead of his seventh tie, he said: “I’m happy and proud to be back in the Davis Cup team. It’s been seven years since I last played a World Group match so to be playing at home in Glasgow will make it extra special. I know how much fun Davis Cup weeks are so I can’t wait to get back with the team and start preparing for this tie. The last Davis Cup match I played back in 2011 was actually in Glasgow so I know from experience that the crowd will do a great job in getting behind the team. We’ll need every single one of them cheering for us as the Americans have an incredibly strong team, especially in the Bryan brothers who are the world number one pairing. That said, I played them at Queen’s and came away with the win and there is absolutely no reason that we can’t do the same again.”

The winners of the tie will face either France or Germany in the quarter-finals. This is Great Britain’s second straight year in the World Group after the team maintained their position within the world’s elite by making the quarter-finals in 2014. Great Britain upset the Americans in San Diego with a 3-1 victory in last year’s first round.

David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer, Aegon UK, added: “It’s very exciting that the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team is back in action on home soil looking to repeat their impressive victory over the USA in San Diego last year. Leon Smith has selected a strong team and we wish Leon and the players every success in Glasgow.”

The Great Britain versus United States rivalry is the oldest in Davis Cup history, dating back to the very first competition which took place in 1900. The two nations last played each other on British soil in the 1999 World Group first round, and the USA lead the current head to head by 11-8.
