American Donald Young continued his strong start to 2015, reaching his third quarter-final of the season as he defeated Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday at the Delray Beach Open by The Venetian® Las Vegas.
World No. 56 Young converted four of his eight break points for the 67-minute victory, improving to an 8-3 season match record. Last week, the 25 year old reached the Memphis singles semi-finals (l. to Anderson) and doubles final (w/Sitak).
“I beat some quality players there, three in a row, which is something I haven’t done often in my career,” said Young. “I got a lot of confidence from that and I came back in a couple situations, a couple tight sets, so that was good.”
Young will next play third-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, who defeated American Tim Smyczek 6-2, 6-4 to reach his first quarter-final of the season.
