Singles – Fourth Round: (3) R Nadal def. (14) K Anderson 7-5 6-1 6-4
When Rafael Nadal comes out of a funk, he really comes out of a funk! Hard to believe he could still lose the #3 ranking to Kei Nishikori. Of course, if he keeps playing like this, he won’t lose it. He leaves Kevin Anderson still at #15.
Singles – Fourth Round: (6) A Murray def. (10) G Dimitrov 6-4 6-7(5-7) 6-3 7-5
Bernard Tomic had harsh words about the scheduling here, but if anyone has cause to complain, it’s Grigor Dimitrov. Playing Andy Murray, one of Scotland’s most famous people, on Burns Night? Talk about tough. And the fates really did seem to be on Murray’s side. Dimitrov had managed to claw his way to 5-5 in the fourth, but then suffered an easy break — and smashed his racquet so hard that it broke into two pieces! Then, come match point, Murray won on a lucky net cord. How many endings do you see like that? “De’il the ane….” Murray seems to be on course for a meeting with Nadal, which would likely put him back in the Top Five; Dimitrov, who had the chance to pass Stan Wawrinka here and reach the Top Ten, will have to content himself with staying #11.
Singles – Fourth Round: (7) T Berdych def. B Tomic 6-2 7-6(7-3) 6-2
Bernard Tomic, as we said above, was very unhappy here; he thought he should have gotten a better court assignment. A better opponent assignment would no doubt have helped too, but that surely files under “luck of the draw.” It’s not helping Tomas Berdych much; he remains at #7, and needs at least two more wins to climb.
Singles – Fourth Round: N Kyrgios def. A Seppi 5-7 4-7 6-3 7-6(7-5) 8-6
This was every bit as close as the score. Three and a half hours. Nick Kyrgios had to save match point. And the winner was assured a Top Forty spot, with the loser having much worse odds — if it had been Kyrgios who had lost, it would have been no odds at all. Seppi still has a shot, but he’s only #40 in safe points, so it’s no sure thing. Kyrgios, the last Australian standing, by contrast clinches a career high; he’ll be at least #36, probably #35, and of course he still could go higher.
Doubles – Third Round: (2) Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. Becker/Sitak 6-2 6-4
Potentially a big win for Julien Benneteau; with this, he passes Daniel Nestor in the rankings, meaning he might end up as high as #4. Win his next one and he’ll pass Nenad Zimonjic, which would probably spell the #3 spot. Another win would take Eduard Roger-Vasselin past Nestor also, meaning that Nestor would be out of the Top Five.
Doubles – Third Round: Herbert/Mahut def. (8) Qureshi/Zimonjic 6-3 6-3
This was sure to hurt somebody, since Nicolas Mahut and Nenad Zimonjic were both semifinalists last year. For the moment, Zimonjic is still at #3, but as we noted above, he could easily lose that spot. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) Bryan………….12740
1..(1) Bryan………….12740
3..(3) Zimonjic………..5730
4..(5) Benneteau……….5530
5..(4) Nestor………….5480
6..(6) Roger-Vasselin…..5230
7..(7) Melo……………5030
8..(8) Granollers………4750
9..(9) Lopez…………..4570
10.(10) Peya……………4480
10.(10) Soares………….4480
Doubles – Third Round: Cuevas/Marrero def. Bolt/Whittington 7-6(9-7) 7-6(7-3)
Doubles – Third Round: F Lopez/Mirnyi def. Erlich/Huey 7-5 6-3
Interesting to note that Feliciano Lopez is still standing in both singles and doubles. Quite an Open for him! That’s helped by such a great partner Max the beast Mirnyi.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: (3) Mladenovic/Nestor def. Zahlavova Strycova/Bopanna 6-2 3-6 10-4
Mixed rankings would make Mladenovic/Nestor the #1 seeds here, so obviously this is no surprise. Interesting to see Daniel Nestor play such a close contest against his regular partner Rohan Bopanna, though.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: (4) Hlavackova/Peya def. Kops-Jones/Lipsky 6-1 6-3
Hlavackova and Peya are both out of ordinary doubles, so this is some small consolation.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: (7) Hingis/Paes def. Jovanovic/Thompson 6-2 7-6(7-2)
Surprisingly close, considering the Australians’ lack of experience.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Dellacqua/Peers def. (8) Peschke/Matkowski 7-5 6-4
Here we have another blow to Mixed rankings, which would have promoted Peschke/Matkowski to #5. It has not been a good event for Mixed rankings so far. This may be another case where the amount of history included in the Mixed rankings is too much, since Peschke and Matkowski both seem to be in funks.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Raymond/Lindstedt def. An. Rodionova/Farah 6-3 6-2
Once again, both our winners are out of ordinary doubles. And they are probably both pretty hungry, Raymond because she’s in such lousy form and Lindstedt because he failed to defend his title in men’s doubles.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Chang/Zhang def. Groenefeld/Rojer 6-2 4-6 10-6
A huge upset by any ranking system imaginable….
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Klepac/Guccione def. Hradecka/Tecau 6-1 7-5
Biggest Upward Mover — Most Places Moved (Top 100)
Leader: Viktor Troicki — Moved 38 places, from #92 to #54.
Troicki won Sydney for the first title of his comeback, and only the second of his career.
Runner-Up: Jiri Vesely — Moved 63 places, from #63 to #39
Vesely won Auckland for his first-ever title.
Biggest Percentage Mover — Cut Ranking By Highest Percent (Top 100)
Leader: Troicki, cut ranking 41%.
Runner-Up: Vesely, 38%.
Biggest Loser — Most Places Lost (Top 100)
Loser: Federico Delbonis, Marcel Granollers, and Vasek Pospisil all lost five places.
Because no events came off this week, no one lost any points. The only reason players fell in the rankings is because others passed them. Eleven players lost three places, three lost four places, and these three lost five, but the difference in all cases is mostly where they stood in the rankings. Granollers, Pospisil, and Delbonis were all between #53 and #57, and a lot of players rocketed from below #60 to around #50.
Biggest Percentage Loser — Worst Percentage Increase in Ranking (Top 100)
Ranking Notes
Because this week saw points come on but not go off, it was much easier to rise than to fall — but even upward moves were hard because so few points were in play. On the downward side, as we see above, there were hardly any moves at all, and none more than 10% (Sock actually fell 9.8%). On the up side, we had four big moves, by the week’s four finalists: Troicki, up 41%; Vesely, up 38%; Mikhail Kukushkin, up 23% (to #51), and Adrian Mannarino, up 18% (to a career-high #36). But no one else rose as much as 8%; the next-best mover was Julien Benneteau, up 7.4% (from #27 to #25 — a gain he has since lost).
