Williams-Squared and Madisons-squared as we near the end of the first week.

Yes dear readers, hang on to your “bonza” hats, especially if they’re the fancy ones with straws and space for your Aussie beer! We are almost at the first week of skewed body clocks and massive bugs the size of pterodactyls.

Petra Kvitova was the main casualty of the day falling to the huge hitting Madison Keys, who quite possible had more of a wish to flatten that poor fluffy tennis ball as she lived up to her promise in fine style in the third round.

Now working with calm and steady Lindsey Davenport, it was a devastating show, especially in the final game where she remained composed as she scored an impressive straight sets win over the two-time Wimbledon champion, 6-4 7-5.

“My hands are still shaking. I’m really glad I served that game out so well,” Keys said in her on-court interview. “Right now, I can’t even process anything – I’m just so excited to play Maddie in the next round.”

She sets up a bout with Madison Brengle, who beat fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3 6-2, who is looking at a spot in the Top 50 no matter what happens in the next round.

“I think it’s a great thing, especially for the young girls coming up. When I was younger, we had a really good group of Americans to look up to. I think that makes a big difference,” Brengle said after her win. “Everybody kind of pushes each other. But I think it’s a very positive group at the same time. I’m really, really optimistic with how American women’s tennis is looking.”

Meanwhile our pick of quote of the day has to go to Venus Williams who came from a set down against Camila Giorgi for a 4-6 6-6(3) 6-1.

“This old cat has a few tricks up her sleeve,” Williams said, to the crowd’s amusement in her on-court interview. “She just wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was playing so aggressively. I’d never played her before, and to play someone of her level for the first time in a major, I didn’t know what to expect. Finally I started understanding what to do in the second set.”

So what do we have to look forward to (besides a really nice roast on Sunday)?

We think that the match of the day has to be Andy Murray against Grigor Dimitrov in their Wimbledon rematch. Murray has already beaten him in Paris, handily in straight sets so all this “grudge” match malarkey can probably go out the window, and in fairness, all that defending your Slam title mojo has long gone for Murray. He has his pointing upwards at the sky thing back (although we do think he’s probably lining up to shoot the incredible noisy vulture-sounding birds that seem to get pretty vocal at key points of matches).

Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova seem to have gotten over their wobbles and have gone back to looking impressive, although we’re sure we’ll see more excitement in week two.

On the QT… have been defending champion Stan Wawrinka, and the rest of the chasing pack, and we should be keeping an eye out for Kei Nishikori, who steadied the sip to make his fourth round for the fourth year in a row, and the amazingly coiffured Milos Raonic. But just don’t be asking him to give you a twirl.
