Kyrgios Signs With IMG
Nick Kyrgios was the most featured man in Melbourne on Day One of the Australian Open. His face featured on the front page of the top selling Herald Sun newspaper and his image is integral to several marketing campaigns. But that public interest is only likely to multiply now the 19 year-old Australian has signed a worldwide marketing and management representation agreement with William Morris Endeavor/IMG.
The management company formed a year ago when the front line publishing, music, motion pictures and television concern bought out the group built by the late Mark McCormack for a reported US$ 2 billion is intent on forming a new portfolio of top-line and youthful tennis talent.
Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was the first major new signing last year, Eugenie Bouchard and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga followed on and now Kyrgios joins the group. ‘‘WME/IMG is thrilled to be representing Nick as we believe the combination of his extraordinary natural talent, charismatic personality and background will help him become one of the most marketable players of his generation,’’ said Fernando Soler, head of IMG’s tennis division.
“WME’s influence has made our division stronger and our client offering more diverse. A player of Nick’s potential signing with us is a testament to where we are as a company and the access and influence now available to our clients.”
The 19-year-old Greek-Malaysian Australian from Canberra sprang to prominence when he beat Rafael Nadal to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year. Previously Kyrgios was managed by the English company Global Tennis Connections and his agent John Morris will continue in his role alongside a team from WME/IMG.
Kyrgios insisted this is a very exciting time in my career and believes the WME/IMG team can help him achieve goals and fine-tune his brand on and off the tennis court. “While tennis is my first priority, I do have a lot of different interests and I look forward to getting involved in the various exciting projects and partnerships that WME/IMG has to offer,” he said.
