Federer Had A Great Year Off-Court Too
It was surely a merry Christmas in the Federer household as the Swiss ace’s record-breaking off-court earning power continued to rise in 2014. The world No. 2 Swiss, according to the Forbes magazine compilation, earned an estimated $40 million in annual off-court income from a handful of blue-chip, long-term sponsors.
Swiss tabloid Blick has compiled an estimate of the Federer millions, with clothing and shoe sponsor Nike leading the way with what the paper says is $13.5 million in sponsorship per year on a ten-year contract.
Close behind are banking giant Credit Suisse with $7 million per annum, while Lindt chocolates and Moet & Chandon champagne each paying an estimated $4 million. Gillette is worth $3 million a year while Mercedes and National Suisse insurance pay the 33-year-old an estimated $2 million each.
“Credit Suisse and Roger Federer have many properties in common: both are rooted in Switzerland, both stand for quality, the pursuit of excellence, dedication, and have an excellent reputation abroad,” said bank CEO Brady Dougan.
Bringing up the rear are Rolex and Jura coffee machines ($1.5 million each) along with Wilson racquets and Sunrise mobile phones on the same annual money.
Blick said that most Federer contracts also specify a contribution to the player’s charity foundation which works with children in Africa and Switzerland.
“Roger Federer embodies the best of Switzerland: talent, humility and a strong attachment to his home,” Swiss brand expert Kaspar Loeb told Blick. “For his sponsors Federer is therefore a safe value. In 2014 he won five titles and the Davis Cup victory.
“He is a citizen of the world and a global brand. Wherever he goes, he attracts people under its spell. In addition.”
Federer also claimed $9.3 million in on court prize money with extra for appearance fees such as his weekend in India for the IPTL estimated at up to $3-4 million. Blick also took a best-guess estimate of the Federer fortune, pegging it at between $350 to 500 million.
