GLOBAL CHICK'S GUIDE TO BOXING DAY AND HER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR  |

Soon it will be time to put aside hopes, aspirations, maybe even delusions of being a fit and healthy person and to overindulge in Christmas Dinner, and avoiding the craziness of Boxing Day… which leads us to our history lesson of the day!

Over in Europe-land there are many ideas around the terminology and it is largely believed that it could have been related to the use of Alms Boxes for donations for the poor dating back to the Middle Ages (now pay attention… not Middle Earth, no Hobbits here… although the Shires were based on rural England, but that’s a story for another time!)

In Britain, it could have referred to the practice of leaving boxes out for the tradespeople who had provided sterling service throughout the year, in a show of appreciation. In large houses where waiting staff would have had to wait on the household over Christmas Day, they were sent home with boxes of gifts the next day including left over food. Perhaps this is why we spend most of Boxing Day trying to find creative ways of using up leftover roasts!

Then again we can read wikipedia as well as the next chick, so for all we know, it’s called Boxing Day because of all the boxes that are left over after Christmas Day pressie opening, and when Global Chick was a mini-chick, rumour has it she had more fun playing with the box that a present had come in… (in fairness she had yet to learn to walk for heaven’s sake, so it was probably the closest thing to gnaw on…).

It’s been a great year out on the circuit, and there are a couple of things that stand out…

Being present at the moment of silence held in Madrid in the memory of Elena Baltacha, whose sad and untimely passing was announced that weekend. The entire tennis family came together and the sentiment continued later in the year with three Rallies for Bally at Queens. Birmingham and Eastbourne to help raise money for her foundation and tennis academy.

We broke the land speed record for the media-centre to Centre Court dash to watch Lord Andrew of Murray walk out as defending Wimbledon champion… which in retrospect was just as well really…

But any day when the World No. 1 dishes out chocolates, as Novak Djokovic (read Chokovic) does at the World Tour Finals, is always fun in the media centre and shh, don’t tell anyone but these gluten free goodies taste almost as good as the real thing, and we felt compelled to do research on this, a lot.

With one week to go before the start of the new season, all that remains is to wish all who are celebrating a Merry Christmas and a festive holiday season, and looking forward to what 2015 will bring us on and off the court.
