It may not have had the same drama as their memorable World Tour Finals semifinal showdown last month, but Swiss stars Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka treated their home fans to a fun evening of tennis while also playing for a great cause on Sunday.
Federer and Wawrinka contested the Match For Africa 2, an exhibition sponsored by Rolex that raised 1.3 million Swiss francs for the Roger Federer Foundation. Hosted by the Hallenstadion in Zurich, a crowd of approximately 11,000 saw Federer prevail over Wawrinka 7-6(4), 6-4 after one hour and 33 minutes of high-quality and fun-loving play.
Only one break of serve occurred in the entire match, and it went to the world No. 2 at 1-1 in the second set. Having already secured the first in a tiebreaker, Federer was in complete control. Wawrinka had two break chances to get back within striking distance at 4-3 but could not convert.
The Roger Federer Foundation promotes access to quality education, supporting projects operated by local nonprofit organizations primarily in six countries in southern Africa and Switzerland. It has reached out to 136,000 children in 2014 and its goal is to impact the lives of more than 1,000,000 children by 2018.
That kind of humanitarian work is proof enough of Federer’s character, but there is no praise like that of your peers. The 17-time Grand Slam champion received more of it earlier this week from Ana Ivanovic, who was a teammate of Federer’s on the Micromax Indian Aces of the International Premier Tennis League.
“Roger Federer is truly a great champion,” Ivanovic said after the IPTL. “He is an impressive figure on and off court. I also have to say that he is a very beautiful person, a true gentleman. He is a great man, I have no doubts about it. We had a chance to talk quite a bit while playing for the IPTL. We talked about family and how to cope with competing while having one. When you hear advice coming from such a champion, it is easy for you to accept it.”
The first Match for Africa, meanwhile, featured Federer and Rafael Nadal in 2010. They also played at the Hallenstadion and raised 2.5 million Swiss Francs.
