PAIRINGS SET FOR SATURDAY’S SEMIFINALS OF USTA NATIONAL 40

HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS AT LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB

Sixth-Seeded Jeff Greenwald Eliminates Third-Seeded Jeff Tarango in Following an entertaining day of quarterfinal action, the men’s and women’s singles semifinals are set for the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

A quarterfinal men’s match featuring two former tournament champions highlighted the day’s schedule as 2009 champion Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo, Calif., eliminated 2010 champion Jeff Tarango of Manhattan Beach, Calif., 6-4, 6-1 on Court No. 2.

The sixth-seeded Greenwald will face another former champion in the semifinals, top-seeded Oren Motevassel of San Jose, Calif. The 47-year-old Motevassel, a former touring professional who was ranked as high as No. 161 in the world, dispatched ninth-seeded Nicolas Chasseray of San Francisco, 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Motevassel won the tournament title in 2011 and 2012.

Top-seeded Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad, Calif., easily advanced to the women’s singles semifinals as she cruised past Maria Nunez of San Diego, 6-0, 6-0. Dawson, who won the National 40s Hard Court title in 2011, has yet to drop a game in this week’s tournament. She will play unseeded Christy Panter of West Hills, Calif., in the semifinals.

Dawson, 47, is looking to regain the tournament title she won three years ago. “I have to play hard, play consistent and stay focused. I just love the competition and I love to compete. It makes it fun,” she said. “It’s always a fabulous tournament and it’s always fun to do well here.”

The other women’s semifinal will feature a rematch of the 2012 singles final as third-seeded Dina McBride of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., meets second-seeded Ros Nideffer of San Diego. Two years ago, McBride defeated Nideffer, 7-5, 6-2 to capture the title.
