Raonic also wins Most Improved award; Pospisil crowned Doubles Player of the Year

Tennis Canada announced Friday the male recipients of the 2014 Tennis Canada Excellence Awards. Milos Raonic (Thornhill, Ont.) has been named Birks Male Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive time. Continuing to grow as an athlete every year, Raonic took the next step in 2014 by making his maiden Grand Slam semifinal, qualifying for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals, and solidifying his place in the Top 10. Also the 2014 Most Improved Male Player of the Year, Raonic’s year-end ranking is No. 8, up from 2013’s No. 11. Rounding out the male high performance awards is Wimbledon champion Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver), the recipient of Male Doubles Player of the Year. Pospisil’s triumph in this category breaks Daniel Nestor’s streak of 13 straight years winning the award.

“I am so impressed by how Milos has composed himself throughout his career and how he is able to get better and better every year,” said Kelly Murumets, president and CEO, Tennis Canada. “He continues to outdo himself and he put together an extraordinary season, one of the best for a Canadian tennis player ever. He and Vasek are both excellent role models to our growing base of tennis fans in Canada, and I wish them both the best in their very bright futures. After recovering from an ankle injury that interrupted the start of his season, Raonic put together an impressive, all-around year. He was the portrait of consistency at Masters 1000 events, making the quarter-finals or better – including one final and two semifinals – at seven of the nine top-tier tournaments. After making the semifinals at Rome, where he pushed Novak Djokovic to three sets, Raonic became the first male Canadian to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final in the Open Era at Roland Garros. He progressed even further at Wimbledon by making the semifinals.

In the first all-Canadian ATP World Tour final at Washington, Raonic defeated Pospisil to claim his sixth title and biggest one of his career to date. After making the Cincinnati semifinals and dropping a five-set fourth rounder at the US Open, the 23-year-old also made the Tokyo final. His most impressive result arguably came at the Paris Masters, where he picked up his first win over a member of the Big Three by taking out Roger Federer in the quarter-finals en route to his second career Masters 1000 final. The result also earned him a position in the eight-man field at the ATP World Tour Finals. Reaching a high of No. 6, Raonic continues to break his own Canadian records.

Pospisil, last year’s Most Improved Male Player, has usurped doubles legend Nestor as Male Doubles Player of the Year for 2014. Pospisil engineered a phenomenal season on the doubles circuit in 2014, starting with his performance at Wimbledon with first-time partner Jack Sock of the United States. The two young stars excited the tennis world with their run to the Wimbledon championship, beating world No. 1s Bob and Mike Bryan in a five-set final to claim the prestigious trophy. They didn’t end there, winning Atlanta and making the Masters 1000 final at Cincinnati before suffering their first defeat. The duo went 14-0 to start their partnership, an ATP World Tour record for a debut team. Pospisil also succeeded with other partners later in the year, clinching his third career title at Basel with Nenad Zimonjic and making the Beijing final with Julien Benneteau. Starting 2014 with a doubles ranking of No. 89, Pospisil is up to world No. 14 and he hit a high of No. 12 in November.

The Tennis Canada Excellence Awards are selected by a committee comprised of high-ranking Tennis Canada personnel and the country’s top national coaches.

Tennis Canada a annoncé vendredi la liste des lauréats pour les Prix d’excellence de 2014. Pour une quatrième année consécutive, Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) a été choisi Joueur de l’année Birks. Raonic, qui ne cesse de franchir des étapes année après année, a fait un pas en plus en 2014 en accédant à son premier carré d’as du Grand Chelem, en se qualifiant pour les championnats de fin de saison de l’ATP World Tour et en consolidant sa place au sein du Top 10. Son ascension du 11e au 8e rang lui vaut également le prix du Joueur le plus amélioré. Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver), champion du double de Wimbledon, s’inscrit à la liste des récipiendaires des Prix d’excellence de 2014 à titre de Joueur de double de l’année, un honneur qui était revenu à Daniel Nestor au cours des 13 années précédentes.

« Je suis vraiment impressionnée par la façon dont Milos se comporte depuis le début de sa carrière et comment il réussit à constamment s’améliorer », déclarait madame Kelly Murumets, présidente et chef de la direction de Tennis Canada. « Il ne cesse de se surpasser et a signé une saison extraordinaire, une des meilleures pour un joueur canadien. Après qu’une blessure à la cheville ait interrompu son début de saison, Raonic est revenu en force. Il a produit de magnifiques résultats sur le Circuit Masters 1000, accédant au moins aux quarts de finale – y compris une finale et deux demi-finales – lors de sept des neuf épreuves du circuit. Après avoir pris part au carré d’as de Rome, où il a poussé Novak Djokovic à la limite de trois manches, Raonic est devenu, à Roland-Garros, le premier Canadien de l’ère ouverte à atteindre les quarts de finale d’un Grand Chelem. Il a franchi un pas de plus à Wimbledon en accédant à la demi-finale.

Lors de la première finale canadienne de l’ATP World Tour à Washington, Raonic a eu raison de Pospisil pour ajouter un sixième titre – et le plus important de sa carrière – à sa feuille de route. Après la demi-finale de Cincinnati et une défaite crève-coeur en cinq manches au quatrième tour des Internationaux des États-Unis, le joueur de 23 ans était aussi finaliste à Tokyo. Son plus impressionnant résultat est sans contredit survenu au Masters de Paris, où il a signé sa première victoire aux dépens d’un membre du Top 3 en indiquant la sortie à Roger Federer en quart de finale, en route vers sa deuxième finale du Circuit Masters 1000. Cette prestation lui a permis de se qualifier pour la Finale de l’ATP World Tour mettant en vedette les huit meilleurs joueurs de la saison. Au cours de l’année, il s’est aussi hissé au sixième rang mondial, améliorant ainsi son propre record canadien.

« Recevoir cette distinction est toujours en honneur », confiait Raonic. « C’est agréable d’être ainsi récompensé dans mon pays et je sens constamment l’appui des amateurs canadiens, peu importe où je joue. Ce prix est ma récompense pour tout le travail effectué cette année. Je suis satisfait de mes progrès et j’ai déjà hâte à la prochaine saison. »

Joueur le plus amélioré de l’an dernier, Pospisil a coiffé le légendaire Nestor pour le prix du Joueur de double de l’année 2014. Pospisil s’est illustré sur le circuit du double, notamment à Wimbledon avec l’Américain Jack Sock. Formant équipe pour la première fois, les deux jeunes vedettes ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre en remportant les grands honneurs, éliminant en cinq manches les numéros un Bob et Mike Bryan lors de la finale. Par la suite, ils ont été couronnés champions à Atlanta et ont participé à la finale du Masters 1000 de Cincinnati avant de subir leur première défaite. Le tandem a établi un record de l’ATP World Tour en amorçant leur partenariat avec 14 gains consécutifs. Pospisil a également obtenu du succès avec d’autres partenaires, récoltant le titre de Bâle avec Nenad Zimonjic et accédant à la finale de Pékin avec Julien Benneteau. Alors qu’il était 89e au classement du double en janvier dernier, Pospisil a terminé la saison au 14e rang et a même occupé la 12e place en novembre.

Les Prix d’excellence de Tennis Canada sont décernés par un comité composé du personnel du service de l’élite de Tennis Canada et des meilleurs entraîneurs nationaux.
