Federer arrives in New Delhi for IPTL as his team picks up another victory
By Ricky Dimon
Roger Federer landed in New Delhi early Sunday morning in advance of his participation in the International Premier Tennis League. Federer will contest the last two matches during the India segment of the IPTL for the Micromax India Aces on Saturday and Sunday, set for a packed schedule complete with men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The IPTL is a two-week event founded by Mahesh Bhupathi–the managing director–that began last Friday and features four teams based in the Philippines, Singapore, India and the United Arab Emirates. It includes stars of the past the present, and future.
After landing in New Delhi, Federer took to Twitter to post a photo from the plane with Aces teammate Pete Sampras: “Just landed in Delhi. Look who I found on the plane #PistolPete“.
Bhupathi also posted a photo on Twitter of himself with the world No. 2. The legendary doubles player from India wrote, “He is here, checked in and ready..@rogerfederer @iptl #breakthecode”.
Through seven matches (three in the Philippines, three in Singapore, and so far one in New Delhi), the Aces are already in first place even without Federer. They improved to five wins and two losses after beating Manila on Saturday in a “super-shootout” between Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to break a tie. Monfils, who had lost his singles set to Tsonga during the main part of the match, got the best of his countryman 10 points to seven.
Federer will kick off Sunday afternoon’s battle with the Singapore Slammers against Tomas Berdych. The Swiss will face rival Novak Djokovic of the UAE Royals on Sunday. Federer will also play doubles with Rohan Bopanna and mixed with Sania Mirza on both days.
