Nadal Is Wary As He Returns To The Tour
Recovering Rafael Nadal has admitted that he will be starting 2015 from the depths as the 14-time grand slam event winner attempts a comeback after another injury-plagued and disappointing season. The 28-year-old Spaniard told Spanish newspaper AS that so far he is merely happy to be back in training again after November’s surprise appendix surgery which forced him to end the 2014 campaign early.
“Very happy to be training again and excited to prepare the next season,” the one-time No. 1 said on his Facebook page. He added in his interview: “It’s always a bit tough starting off after a few difficult months, without any continuity, and after the last month and half without being able to play any sport and the appendicitis.
“What I have to do this month is to get myself fit physically, progress my tennis as much as possible and lay the foundations to start well in Abu Dhabi and in Doha. Then take advantage of those tournaments to recover the competitiveness that I’ve not had for months due to the injuries.”
Nadal will be returning as tennis elites Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer go from strength to strength after wrapping up superlative 2014 seasons.
All that Nadal can do is work as hard as his body permits during the few weeks remaining of the off season before hurrying down to an exhibition payday in Abu Dhabi to start the new year and then testing himself at the ATP event in early January in Doha.
As for the Australian Open, where he lost the final to Stan Wawrinka in January, Nadal was making no predictions. “If you train well and you feel right physically, the process is much quicker. In a few days you pick up the speed of the ball again, the movement in the legs and, if I do good work at home and I play well at the start of the year, that could be enough to arrive in Australia well prepared.
“You never know what can happen, this isn’t forever. Federer has finished the year very well, the same as Djokovic. They are going start again strongly and I from almost zero, with more problems. I have to recover what I’ve lost during the last six months. It’s a nice challenge to overcome and I’m motivated.”
