Federer To Play ITPL This Week
With her Indian Aces team in the lead by two points after the first weekend of play at the International Premier Tennis League in Manila, Sania Mirza could not be happier with her doubles contribution to the new squad.
The Indian side paces the Dubai USE Royalsby 12 points to 10 with ties in Singapore coming up this week prior to competition at home in India at the weekend as the fortnight-long exhibition league moves into gear at its inaugural season.
But top thrill for Mirza has to be the inclusion of Roger Federer on the side, with the Swiss set to make his major contribution at the weekend Indian series of ties in the four-team league. “I am really excited. It is great for tennis in India and Asia. I am really excited to play in same team as Roger Federer,” Mirza said. I’m looking forward to playing with him.”
Federer will make his IPTL appearance at the weekend as he visits India for three days before returning to his training base in Dubai to prepare for 2015.
Andy Murray reputedly collected more than $1 million for three days work playing in the International Premier Tennis League and the former Wimbledon and US Open champion was finally victorious for his team Manila Mavericks after two days of disappointment.
The 27 year-old Scot, one of the Manila franchise’s two icon players alongside Maria Sharapova, was used by the Mavericks’ coach Treat Huey as a mixed doubles player and the men’s singles players on all three days.
After a pair of defeats against both the UAE Royals and Indian Aces, Huey decided to shuffle his pack in the Mavericks’ concluding home-based match in Manila’s Mall of Asia. So instead of Sharapova, he paired Murray with Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens in the mixed doubles against the Singapore Slammers’ Serena Williams and Lleyton Hewitt with an emphatic 6-1 score.
Buoyed by a long awaited success, Murray then rounded off his commitment by beating Nick Kyrgios 6-5 in the men’s singles which was decided by a timed five-minute shootout. And the Mavericks finally registered a team victory, winning 27-19 against the Slammers team that had Williams in the team for the first time after she emerged from a five weeks long lay-off following her win in the WTA Finals.
And the women’s world no.1 was forced to admit: “You have to just go the second you land even though you have this jet-lag.”
And while Murray jets back to Britain, Williams and the rest of the league will now head to Singapore where Andre Agassi arrived yesterday to take his place in the Slammers’ line-up.
Murray will re-unite with his newly announced fiancée Kim Sears in London before heading on to Miami for his habitual winter training block. Then he intends to be in his native Scotland for Christmas before starting his 2015 schedule on New Year’s Day in the exhibition Mubadula World Tennis Championships in Abdu Dhabi.
Looking back on his brief but lucrative stint in the IPTL, Murray said: “I think a lot of people were initially skeptical about it. But if you look at the amount of people who have showed up here, there’s been unbelievable support from Friday through to Sunday, it shows the people here love tennis. I hope we can come back next year and do it again.”
Murray continued: “I’m enjoyed myself because it’s good fun and very different. The format and the different rules do take a bit of getting used to but the atmosphere is great and it’s like a basketball match, in between the points and before the points start.”
