Semi-final previews
At last we are at the business end of the tournament, and hopefully we will have a semi-final line-up that will do the season-ending finale with eight of the best male players of the year justice.
First up we have the unstoppable Novak Djokovic who not only beat Tomas Berdych every bit as handily as he has been doing all week, but wrapped up the year-ending No. 1. So now that’s over, he can get down to the business of defending his two-time title.
If Kei Nishikori can bring every element of his game, nifty footwork, clean hitting, then this could be an interesting match, but he will need to be at his very best to even make an impression on Djokovic.
The thing that has impressed about the Serb this week is that he seems to have all the time in the world on the ball at the moment. His legendary cat-like reflexes have pretty much shrunk the court to the size of a postage stamp (what we used for mail before this electronic nonsense)!
There is no doubt that the organisers are praying for a Federer and Djokovic final, they have been doing probably been doing rain dances and everything – have you looked outside the door recently?
But the crowds do deserve a more suitable punch-up on the blue courts than we have seen thus far, with the exception of Nishikori’s three-setter with super-sub David Ferrer.
Another monumental effort will be required by Stan Wawrinka, who faces compatriot Roger Federer in the other semi-final. Wawrinka broke Cilic to snare his place in the semi-final after just four games in his match.
All well and good there, except that pesky Cilic suddenly tapped into the vein of form that at least took him to his last title in Moscow. Putting aside Berdych’s wonderful putdown of Cilic after their match, the Croatian suddenly had Wawrinka working way harder than he wanted to ahead of a match-up with the resurgent Roger.
Wawrinka has beaten Federer twice on clay and at least has taken him to three sets the last two times they have played on hard courts in the open air. If they tried that here they would be blown into the Thames with one hearty gust, and with no elements to chide him, Federer is very much the man in the driving seat.
The likelihood is the final many would want to see – Djokovic v Federer, but wouldn’t it be just like this tournament if the tables were turned?
