Round up of Day 2… By Global Chick.
Welcome to the 6-1 6-1 club
It’s what all the cool kids do. Such can be the lottery of ticket-buying for the World Tour Finals, you have to feel for ticket holders for either the day session, the night session or, heaven forefend, both sessions on Day 2, when the crowd were treated to two one-sided encounters that both ended in an hour (but remember, tube time, so bonus).
First to the block was Tomas Berdych who had more than just a bad day at the office – he was blown off court by Whirlwind Stan Wawrinka who firmly laid to rest all this “out of form” talk.
Normally quite acid in his post-match press conferences he could only acknowledge that it had not been his day out there.
“There are days like that. Now it’s over of that. Really, I mean, it’s just matter of looking forward, trying to find a way for next few days. Just try to leave this somewhere very far and try to come up with some better tennis.”
Wawrinka quipped that he was trying to prove his worth to compatriot and Swiss team demi-god Roger Federer that they do have a chance in the Davis Cup final next week, but in all seriousness it was a timely reminder that this guy can play.
“I didn’t expect to win that easy,” said Wawrinka. “But I was ready to play well. I had a great week of preparation. Even if the result wasn’t there in Basel and Paris, I was feeling the ball really well on the practice court.
“When I feel good on the court, I’m ready to beat everybody. It’s never easy, but you have to fight for it.”
You then have to also feel for Marin Cilic who now has gone 11 matches without the sniff of a win against Novak Djokovic. He too was dispatched a few minutes shy of an hour, and ticket holders may wonder if they were actually present for a boxing bout as opposed to a couple of tennis matches.
While the punch-drunk losers from the first round matches today gather their wits to play each other on Wednesday, the two winners should promise a much higher-quality match. If Wawrinka is back to some semblance of the form that took him to two titles at the start of the year, then surely we are in for a competitive match?
NOTE: No quotes from Djokovic at the time of writing
