AMERICANS UPSET TOP SEEDS AT THE SOUTH SEAS ISLAND RESORT WOMEN’S PRO CLASSIC TO ADVANCE TO THE SINGLES QUARTERFINALS

Women’s Pro Classic the Final Stop of the 2015 Australian Open Wild Card Challenge

CAPTIVA, FLORIDA – On Thursday, at the South Seas Island Resort Women’s Pro Classic $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Event (http://ssirproclassic.com/), several of the top seeded players were upset in the Round of 16 Singles Play including Americans Grace Min (seeded #1) who lost in three close sets to fellow American Louisa Chirico 6-7 (6), 7-5, 5-7 and Irina Falconi who fell to Jennifer Brady of the U.S. 4-6, 4-6.

Also upsetting a top seeded player was young American Sachia Vickery who defeated Maria Duque-Marino (seeded #8) in a third set deciding tiebreaker to advance to the Quarterfinals with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-3 (3) win. This year’s Women’s Pro Classic will be the last stop on the 2014 USTA Pro Circuit Women’s Calendar and the finale of the 2015 Australian Open Wild Card Challenge showcasing highly competitive tennis from the game’s emerging and future tennis stars on the WTA Tour. A new series being put on this year by the USTA Pro Circuit, the Australian Open Wildcard Challenge is designed to award the best performing player during the last three $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Events in 2014 with a spot in the Singles Main Draw of the 2015 Australian Open.

“With the top U.S. seeded players upset in the tournament today, it leaves the Australian Wild Card up for grabs to a couple of the American players still left in the draw,” said Nick Blackwood, Tournament Director of the Women’s Pro Classic. “There are several scenarios that could play out the rest of the week to determine who will win the Australian Open Wild Card and we look forward to watching the action unfold the next few days in Captiva.”

With the latest WTA Tour rankings being released this week, Grace Min is now ranked No. 103 in the world with Irina Falconi ranked No. 114 which means that both are approaching the cut-off for direct entry into the Australian Open without having to win the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge. Still left in the Singles Main Draw at the Women’s Pro Classic in contention to win the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge are Jennifer Brady and Louisa Chirico who will both be back in action on Friday for their Quarterfinal matches.

In the Doubles Main Draw, American duo Asia Muhammad and Maria Sanchez (seeded #2) are in the Semifinals and will take on #3 seeds Irina Falconi and Petra Martic for a spot in Saturday’s Doubles Finals. On Friday, the singles matches will begin at not before 10:00 a.m. with the two doubles matches the last match on Stadium and Court 3.
