Popular Davis Cup captain and former number 1 Patrick Rafter has been promoted into one of the top jobs in Australian tennis, with the former two-time grand slam winner being named as performance director for Tennis Australia.
Rafter will keep his Davis Cup job for now , with speculation mounting that he will eventually hand it over to one-time protégé Lleyton Hewitt when the 33-year-old ends his career.
Rafter will report directly to Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley as he oversees development of Aussie talent and monitors the performances of current ATP players. “It’s a challenge I am really looking forward to. There is so much I can learn but also a lot I think I can contribute,” said Rafter. “I feel the time is right to step into this role and help us take the next step.
“I would like everyone to know that I am not coming into this role early next year saying that I have all the answers. Far from it. I am going to take my time, listen, watch and learn.”
“But I also think there is a lot I have gleaned from years on the tour being around a lot of great players, coaches and people that can help us get better and better.” he added.
In Tilleys call he said he was happy to welcome Rafter, 41, to the new role. “Pat is an outstanding person, strong leader and terrific mentor. His principles and personal ideology align very strongly with what we want young Australians to achieve in world tennis.”
