TIDBITS

* Raonic beats Federer to keep Race hopes alive , not great for RF trying to regain #1.

* Djokovic of course sure to stay #1 this week

* Berdych beats Anderson to clinch London spot

* Ferrer two points from match against Nishikori — and loses; Race finally over , Milos earned the berth with the win over RF.

PARIS RESULTS AND BRIEF SUMMARY

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (8) A Murray 7-5 6-2

Andy Murray’s recent results show that he is getting back toward the game’s elite, but perhaps he’s still just “getting,” not “gotten.” This means he won’t be returning to #4 this week — he’ll be no better than #6. Novak Djokovic will stay at #1; indeed, in light of the next result, his chances of being the year-end #1 are getting a lot better.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) M Raonic def. (2) R Federer 7-6(7-5) 7-5

Interesting motivations here. Milos Raonic had to win this match to have any London hopes. Roger Federer had to win it to have any hope of reaching #1 this week. Who had more on the line?

The other factor is, Federer had played seven matches in twelve days. Raonic bothers him somewhat anyway, and if you throw in fatigue, it’s perhaps no surprise that the Canadian finally scored his first win over Federer. Particularly since Raonic played a very good match — pretty definitely his best here. It means Federer will stay stuck at #2 this week, and he’ll have a harder bar to climb if he is to make it at London. Indeed, a title for Novak Djokovic here could make it almost impossible.

Raonic’s win took him past Marin Cilic in the rankings, but he still had to wait for David Ferrer’s result to know if that would qualify him for London.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) T Berdych def. (14) K Anderson 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-4

Tomas Berdych is struggling again, but at least this finally settled something. With the win, Berdych clinched for London — the first player to do so on Friday, and the second this week. Kevin Anderson will end the year at #15.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) K Nishikori def. (4) D Ferrer 3-6 7-6(7-5) 6-4

David Ferrer led by a minibreak for most of the second set tiebreak, but gave back two minibreaks from 5-4 ahead, and the result was a third set. It was a strange match — Ferrer in the first two sets won the majority of the points but was somehow always in trouble. It was pretty clear why: He put in only 48% of first serves. He picked it up a little in the third set, but not enough; that cost him another break in game nine, and Nishikori served his way into London.

This was the day’s last match, and through two sets it looked as if we still wouldn’t settle anything. But when Ferrer lost, that meant he was out of the Race. Ferrer will be the #1 London alternate, and the qualifiers are Djokovic, Federer, (Nadal will not play), Wawrinka, Murray, Berdych, Nishikori, and Raonic.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Paes/Wawrinka 6-3 6-3

No surprise here, but this won’t help Stan Wawrinka get his glitches worked out….

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (5) Granollers/Lopez def. Cuevas/Giraldo 6-3 6-2

The doubles Race is over, and Granollers/Lopez are going to London. (Which is making our doubles coverage a lot more boring to write!) Still, this isn’t a very comfortable surface for them; a good result here has to be good preparation.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Matkowski/Melzer def. (7) Bopanna/Nestor 6-4 7-6(7-3)

This means that Nenad Zimonjic will remain ahead of his once and future partner Daniel Nestor in the contest for #3. Zimonjic hasn’t yet clinched the year-end #3 spot, but we know Nestor won’t get it; it will be Zimonjic, Peya/Soares, Melo, or just possibly Benneteau or Granollers.

It appears Rohan Bopanna will end the year below the Top 25 — as will Leander Paes; the great Indian doubles dynasty is starting to crack.

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
