Andy Murray closed in on a qualification berth for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Julien Benneteau in the BNP Paribas Masters second round on Wednesday.
The eighth seed is guaranteed his seventh consecutive year of qualifying for the season finale, held 9-16 November at The O2 in London, should he reach the Paris quarter-finals. His last hurdle will be facing the winner between ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov and Pablo Cuevas in the next round.
Murray extended to 5-0 his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Benneteau with the 71-minute victory. The 27-year-old Murray won 75 per cent of points on his serve and converted all three break points against his 32-year-old French opponent.
The 2013 Wimbledon champion had played for five straight weeks entering this ultimate ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season, winning titles in Shenzhen (d. Robredo), Vienna (d. Ferrer) and Valencia (d. Robredo), reaching the Beijing semi-finals (l. to Djokovic) and bowing out in the Shanghai third round. Murray is a four-time quarter-finalist in Paris (2007-’08, 2010-’11).
