US OPEN TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY WITH JOE HUNT TRIBUTE   |

The US Open will host the third annual US Open Military Appreciation Day on, Monday, Sept. 1, at the 2014 US Open. The day will be anchored by a tribute to the late 1943 U.S. Nationals champion Lt. Joe Hunt, featuring Vice Admiral Walter “Ted” Carter and members of the Hunt family in Arthur Ashe Stadium. In addition, military support organizations Semper Fi Fund and Freedom Alliance are sponsoring two groups of wounded military service members and veterans, who will be honored during an in-stadium recognition.

The day will kick off with a ceremony in Arthur Ashe Stadium honoring Lt. Hunt, who was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and trained as a Navy fighter pilot. Seventeen months after he captured the championship with a win over fellow Davis Cup doubles partner Jack Kramer, Hunt was killed during a Navy flight training accident off Daytona Beach, Fla., two weeks before his 26th birthday. Members of the Hunt family, including the late champion’s great nephew, also named Joe Hunt, will be on hand to participate in a coin toss.

As part of the USTA Foundation’s Military Outreach initiative, the US Open also will honor 12 Wounded Warriors. The service members will be acknowledged for their sacrifice, bravery and courage in the line of duty. The military contingent will be treated to a day of tennis in a luxury suite inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. The USTA Foundation is committed to providing an opportunity for wounded, ill and injured service members, veterans and their families to use the sport of tennis to help integrate back into their communities and with their families.

In support of the day’s celebration, Chase, a US Open sponsor provided tickets to the USTA Foundation to be distributed to various military affiliated organizations to attend Military Appreciation Day, including USO New York, Naval Weapons Station Earle, the U.S. Coast Guard, and attendees from this year’s “Warrior and Family Tennis Days” hosted by USTA Foundation and Johnson and Johnson.
