The 1987 Wimbledon Champion Pat Cash and the two-time French Open winner Sergi Bruguera have added their names to an all-star line-up in the Statoil Masters Tennis, the IMG-owned and staged event held at the Royal Albert Hall, 3-7 December.
Cash, who beat John McEnroe 14-12 in the deciding set of the 2000 final to end the American’s three-year unbeaten run at the Royal Albert Hall, will take on McEnroe again in an exhibition match.
Bruguera, who won back-to-back French Open titles in 1993 and 1994, will join the ATP Champions Tour field to take on Andy Roddick, Fernando Gonzalez, Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski and Thomas Enqvist. Mark Philippoussis has withdrawn from the tournament.
“The Royal Albert Hall is the most incredible place to play tennis,” said Cash. “So many of my favourite bands have played here over the years, so to be able to play tennis in the same arena is a real thrill. The final I had against Mac in 2000 was a good one and we’ve had some battles there over the years, so let’s do it again!”
Bruguera, at 43, will be the oldest player in the Champions Tour field, but he keeps himself in great shape, not least by helping to coach the World No.22, Richard Gasquet.
“Any time you get to play in the Royal Albert Hall, you take it,” said Bruguera. “I’m not as young as some of the other guys that I’ll be playing against, but I keep myself in shape, I’m going to be ready and I’m looking forward to the challenge!”
As well as competing in the ATP Champions Tour event, Roddick, McEnroe and Henman will join Billie Jean King, Sir Elton John, Kim Clijsters and Sabine Lisicki for the Mylan World TeamTennis Smash Hits tennis charity event, which will be held in the evening session on finals day – Sunday December 7th. It is the first time that the event will be held outside the United States, and will raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
