Rumors that relations between Novak Djokovic and coach Boris Becker were a little socially strained have yet to be confirmed. However the choice of name for the world no.1’s new-born baby son will doubtless refuel speculation as Novak and his wife Jelena have decided to name their first child Stefan.
Whether the exploits of Stefan Edberg came into the Djokovics’ thinking has yet to be ascertained but the Swede was Becker’s paramount rival in a head to head series that amounted to 35 encounters, denying him the 1988 and 1990 Wimbledon titles.
Reports in the Serbian media said the baby was born on Tuesday evening in Nice, France with no complications and was completely healthy. Mother and child are said to be doing well and early this morning European time Djokovic used Twitter to tell the world: “Stefan, our little angel was born. I ‘m proud of my beautiful wife. Thanks for all the love and affection that you have shown us. We love you.”
The Djokovics chose Nice for the birth rather than Belgrade in Serbia as it was close to their home in Monte Carlo. It is understood Jelena’s parents Miomir and Vera Ristic were in the South of France to be close to their daughter but Novak’s father and mother Srdjan and Diana were in Belgrade.
Last night they organized a party to ‘wet the baby’s head’ at the family owned Novak restaurant in New Belgrade.
Early today Ana Ivanovic, a lifelong friend of Djokovic, took time out from the BNP Paribas WTA Finals to tweet her congratulations, saying: “Lots of warm congratulations to @JelenaRisticNDF and @DjokerNole for welcoming their first son! Wishing you all the very best! ”
And soon after Becker followed up by tweeting: “Congratulations from the Becker family for your first born son Stefan !”
Making things official, Djokovic then used his own website novakdjokovic to spread the news. “We are delighted to announce that Jelena Djokovic gave birth to a wonderful, healthy and a lovely boy, called Stefan. The birth went in the best possible manner, baby and the mother feel well.
“Novak will spend the following several days with the baby and his wife Jelena, after which he travels to Paris, where he will compete at the ATP Masters tournament.”
So Djokovic will get back to work at the end of the week as he prepares to defend his title at the BNP Paribas Masters at Bercy and after a week’s break will head to London where he is again defending champion at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
