Andy Murray secured an efficient 6-1, 7-5 start as Scot tries to improve his status in the race for a spot in next month’s ATP season-ending finals in London. Murray stands outside the sweet spot in the chase for the eight-man competition from November 9, currently ninth.
He improved his status slightly just over a week ago by winning a title in Wuhan but will have lots more work if he is to rise himself into the field. Ahead of him are last week’s tournament finalists Tomas Berdych (seventh) and Milos Raonic on eighth.
Murray reached he second round in less than 90 minutes with six aces and six breaks of serve against his Russian opponent in the first-time meeting. “I started the match well, he wasn’t in much of a rhythm at the beginning,” Murray said post-match. “He was timing the ball a lot better in the second set. I just had to find a way to get through. “It was a good start for me, but there is some work to be done.”
The 44th-ranked Feliciano Lopez booked his place against compatriot and second seed Rafael Nadal by winning a first-round contest over Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7(12), 6-3, 6-4. Nadal, suffering with early-stage appendicitis, has elected to play this week despite his health problem.
Two seeds lost in quick-fire fashion, with Russian Mikhail Youzhny extending his dominance over patchy Latvian Ernests Gulbis, the number 12, to 4-3 overall after a 6-4, 6-1 win. Italian 15th seed Fabio Fognini suffered the worst defeat of his career as he lost to 553rd-ranked Chinese wild card Wang Chuhan 7-6(5), 6-4. The unpredictable Fognini “saluted” the cheering home crowd with his extended middle finger as he walked off the court after going down despite 11 aces against the neophyte.
Wang went out a week ago in the first round of Beijing qualifying while Fognini has now suffered his fifth defeat in succession. His last win came two months ago in Cincinnati.
Vasek Pospisil advanced as Colombian Santiago Giraldo went into meltdown in a confrontation with chair umpire Fergus Murphy, losing all third-set concentration in a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1 loss.
Slovak Martin Klizan, a winner over Nadal last week, beat Sam Groth 7-6(1), 6-3. France’s Gilles Simon, a Tokyo semi-finalist at the weekend, started with a win over Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 while Frenchman Julien Benneteau defeated Zhang Ze of China 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Croatian Ivo Karklovic reached the first of the third-round spots after 24 aces assured him on 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 defeat of Taiwan’s Lu-Hsun Yu.
