Two familiar foes with a long history will meet in the Red Rock Open Pro singles final on Sunday, as American Madison Brengle will take on Michelle Larcher De Brito of Portugal.
Brengle, the No. 4 seed from Dover, Del., ended qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko’s run of six consecutive wins in Las Vegas in a powerful 6-4, 6-2 semifinal victory in the USTA Women’s $50,000 Pro Circuit event taking place at the Red Rock Country Club.
For her part, Larcher De Brito, the No. 8 seed, beat No. 3-seeded Anna Tatishvili of Boca Raton, Fla., 6-3, 7-5, navigating windy conditions to capture the day’s first semifinal.
“I’ve had some really great matches here this week,” Larcher DeBrtio said in a post-match interview with USTA Live Stream commentator Kirsten Fairchilds. “It was tough to adjust with the conditions and the wind (gusts of 21 mph) throughout the day.”
Larcher De Brito survived a second-round scare earlier in the week when she faced a match point against qualifier Ema Burgic. Larcher De Brito eventually prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker.
Larcher De Brito called Brengle “a friend,” and the pair have squared off against each other seven times in their careers, with Larcher De Brito winning five times.
Last year in the second round in Las Vegas, however, it was the unseeded Brengle who upset the No. 2-seeded Larcher De Brito, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Brengle’s only other win against Larcher De Brito came in the La Costa, Calif., WTA event in 2010.
Larcher De Brito has wins over Brengle in Memphis, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Nottingham, Great Britain and Charleston. The win in Rancho Santa Fe was the only time the two have faced each other in a final.
Larcher De Brito, who was once coached by tennis Hall of Famer Nick Bollettieri and in 2013 made international headlines when she upset Maria Sharapova in the second round at Wimbledon, was asked how she would assess her six-year pro career. “There have been a lot of ups and downs,” she said.
In the doubles final on Sunday at 11 a.m. it will be local Las Vegas resident Asia Muhammad and former USC All-American Maria Sanchez against Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay and Maria Irigoyen of Argentina in a matchup of the top-two seeded teams.
The first 50 fans who enter on Sunday will receive a Red Rock Pro Open hat or visor, compliments of Adidas. There will also be a raffle for five $100 gift cards to the Adidas outlet in between the two final matches. Everyone will receive a free raffle ticket with admission and additional tickets are available for purchase for $5 each or five for $20.
