Former tennis great Mats Wilander expects that 33-year-old Roger Federer has another five years left in his career, such is the enthusiasm for the game still exhibited by the record 17-time grand slam winner. Former teenaged Roland Garros champion Wilander, now a Eurosport tennis guru, predicts great things ahead for the Swiss whose enthusiasm for the sport remains at a peak.

Wilander puts down his instinct to the curiosity that Federer still has in reserve, even as a father of two sets of infant twins. “He is interested in the world of tennis much more than people would know or think. He really is interested in everything,” said the Swede, 50. “He watches, he controls, he asks. He also likes to try all the time different things while training and practicing.

“He is far more interested in the dynamics of the sport than I had ever seen before in a player. His love for tennis is enormous. He wants to keep on learning, and that’s why he hired Stefan Edberg in his team. He wanted to improve his volley”.

Federer won his last major two years ago at Wimbledon and suffered through an injury-plagued 2013 before bouncing back in 2014, regaining his place in the top three and winning titles in Dubai, Halle and Cincinnati. He lost a US Open semi-final to Marin Cilic after playing the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, going down last July in a tense five-setter.

“He has a big heart. He is a big fighter and I see him playing for five more years, achieving one of the most long-lived careers in the history of the sport,” said Wilander.
