TIDBITS

* Serena too sick to finish Wuhan opener; retires before Cornet — who becomes the first player since Henin to beat Serena three times in one year

* Halep loses marathon to Muguruza; now runs real risk of losing #2 ranking to Sharapova

* Cornet or Muguruza now likely to hit Top Twenty (whoever lasts longer will likely be at least #20); Stosur out of Top Twenty

* Kvitova clobbers Knapp, assures that she will stay Top Five

* Bouchard, Kerber, Wozniacki advance

* Jankovic forced to retire against Vandeweghe

* Bottom eight seeds now all eliminated as Errani, Makarova, Petkovic upset

* Loss means no Top Ten spot for Jankovic or Errani, which means that Kerber is now sure to be at least #10

* Karolina Pliskova’s seventh straight win, over Petkovic, puts her in Top Thirty (but Petkovic gets quick revenge as she and Mattek-Sands beat Pliskovas in doubles)

* Zahlavova Strycova also in Top Thirty after win over Keys

Wuhan

Alize Cornet nailed her third win this season over Serena Williams as the American top seed quit with viral illness during her opening second-round match while holding a 6-5 lead. The last to take down Williams three times in the same year was Justin Henin in 2007. Williams said later she felt poorly in a match which was past of a run of upset losses by seeds at the new event.

“I’m sorry to all the fans in Wuhan…I felt dizzy and nauseous in the first set and unfortunately couldn’t continue,” said Williams, playing for the first time since celebrating her US Open title over Caroline Wozniacki. Frenchwoman Cornet beat Williams at Dubai in February and in the Wimbledon third round.

Last week’s Tokyo finalist Wozniacki was one of the few name players who survived in the Chinese hothouse. The Dane stared with a win over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(4). Canadian fifth seed Eugenie Bouchard struggled past German Mona Barthel 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while seventh seed Angelique Kerber beat Zarina Diyas 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Other seeds were not so lucky, with No. 2 and French Open finalist Simona Halep losing to Garbine Muguruza of Spain 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Halep has managed just four wins from her last four tournaments; Muguruza accounted for Williams in the second round at Roland Garros four months ago.

Serb tenth seed Jelena Jankovic stopped with illness while trailing 4-1 against American Coco Vandeweghe. American Alison Riske knocked out Italian 11th seed Sara Errani of Italy 6-4, 6-4; Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky stopped US Open semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova, the 13th seed, 6-4, 6-1.

Australian Casey beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(7), 6-7(5), 6-1, but Kirsten Flipkens put out Aussie Jarmila Gajdosova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Czech Karolina Pliskova, the weekend Seoul champion, extended her win streak to seven straight by beating 16th seed Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-4.

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
