Wild Cards Win Opening Round

Matches at Red Rock Pro Open

Two Americans took advantage of their USTA wild cards as former three-time Tennessee All-American Caitlin Whoriskey and current UCLA sophomore Jennifer Brady each won first-round singles matches at the Red Rock Pro Open on Tuesday.

Whoriskey, 26, beat 18-year-old Louisa Chirico of New York, 6-3, 6-0, while Brady had a tougher time with France’s Amandine Hesse, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-3, on the first day of main-draw play at the Red Rock Country Club.

“I just seemed to lose focus in that second set,” said Brady, who won the Pac-12 Conference singles title last spring as a freshman. “She seemed to play more aggressive. But in the third set I was able to turn it around.”

The tournament’s third wild card is former world No. 7-ranked Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic. She faces U.S. qualifier and 2011 Las Vegas singles finalist Alexa Glatch Wednesday in the second match on Stadium Court.

In the final round of qualifying on Tuesday, Glatch beat former Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson. After dropping the first set 6-3 to Glatch, Stevenson was forced to retire because of illness.

Unseeded Las Vegas resident Asia Muhammad fell in her first-round singles match to No. 7-seeded Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay, 6-3, 7-5. Muhammad is currently ranked No. 243 in the world WTA Tour rankings. Muhammad is half of the top-seeded doubles team with partner Maria Sanchez and will open play on Wednesday in the fourth match on Stadium Court.

Former US Open Girls’ Junior champion Samantha Crawford also qualified by winning her third match in three days. She beat Petra Rampre of Slovenia, 6-2, 6-2, on Tuesday to qualify.

Also on the schedule on Wednesday in a first-round match is former US Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin, the tournament’s defending champion who faces Britain’s Naomi Broady in the first match on Stadium Court starting at 9:30 a.m. Oudin celebrated her 23rd birthday on Tuesday and won her first-round doubles match.
