Injured Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the exhibition International Premier Tennis League competition in Asia with his right wrist injury apparently still bothering him. The one-time No. 1 has not played since losing in the Wimbledon fourth round.
His scheduled ATP appearances starting next week in Beijing and Shanghai now look to be in doubt, with no news from his camp on his program.
Former Indian player Mahesh Bhupathi broke the Nadal news on Twitter, noting that the Spaniard had pulled from the Indian team which makes up part of the league. As of now teams will be based in Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Singapore and India with competition set for dates between November 28 and December 13. “We regret to announce that due to health reasons, Rafael Nadal will not be playing in the IPTL,” said the IPTL in a tweet.
IPTL officials said that longtime holdout Roger Federer will apparently replace Nadal on the Indian side, which is also due to feature former great Pete Sampras. The new league is offering prize money reported at nearly $39 million, with millions more in guarantees for world-class ATP and WTA players who will jet in for brief match appearances in front of tennis-starved Asian audiences.
Those on the tentative IPTL roster include Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and on the women’s side Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki. Ties will comprise men’s and women’s singles and doubles plus mixed doubles and legends singles (one-set matches).
