The United States’ record Davis Cup streak is alive. In 2015, Team USA will compete in the World Group for the 27th straight time dating back to 1989. No nation is enjoying a longer uninterrupted stay in the highest category of Davis Cup competition.
John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Bob and Mike Bryan comfortably extended the streak by sweeping Slovakia in a World Group playoff tie this weekend in Chicago. Isner opened on Friday with a routine win over Norbert Gombos, Querrey also prevailed in straight sets at the expense of Martin Klizan, and the Bryan brothers finished things off on Saturday by crushing Gombos and Lukas Lacko 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.
The Bryans needed a mere one hour and 16 minutes to get the job done. Their four games lost almost equaled a U.S. Davis Cup record. In both 1929 and 1936, Wilmer Allison and John Van Ryn surrendered just three games in doubles victories.
“It was one of our better Davis Cup performances because I felt we were hitting in all facets of the game,” Mike explained. “Started feeling good in practice early in the week and carried that onto the match court, which was nice. Didn’t really have any difficulty out there. Just thought we started hot and just kept it up; kept our energy high. So it feels good to take care of business and get back into the World Group.”
“If you can get nine sets on the trot, obviously that’s a dream scenario for you. The guys fought hard and prepared very well. We played well. It was a very, very good weekend for us.”
The Americans last won a Davis Cup title in 2007, when they defeated Russia in the final. They have since lost twice in the World Group semifinals, to Spain in both 2008 and 2012. The U.S.A. was forced into the playoffs this year after losing at home to Great Britain in the first round.
