Patrick McEnroe announced that he is stepping down from his position as USTA Head of Player Development, effective immediately.
McEnroe made it plain that his decision to stand down was heavily influenced by the USTAs plans to relocate to a new $60 million player-development complex in Lake Nona, Fla., outside Orlando, in two years time. He had no intentions of moving his family from their New York home but felt his successor should certainly be based in Orlando . ( if you only work 10 days a month you could live anywhere? No ? )
Serena Williams seems on course to give the United States a Grand Slam champion to end 2014 but otherwise, especially in the mens game, its been a tennis year best forgotten under the Star Spangled Banner.
Apart from Jack Sock winning the Wimbledon doubles title in a new partnership with Canadian Vacek Popisil and Noah Rubin beating Stefan Kozlov in the boys final, there has been little to cheer and in the senior game, the United States suffered their most ignominious All England Club Championships at singles since 1911 with no male or female player making it beyond the third round.
McEnroe of course comes from a family where excuses are just not tolerated and speaking at a press conference at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center at New Yorks Flushing Meadows, he said: I think we just need to get better. ( recently referred to as one of “the Teflon Bros ” )
Players need to get better. Coaches need to get better. There’s some disappointment in not being able to see the whole thing through. Obviously, the world has caught up to us.” ( we need to give players the travel office phone number and every candidate should have a huge travel allowance ..)
I will be stepping down from my position and it made all the sense in the world that the person in this position be full-time based in Orlando, said McEnroe who at the end of 2010 resigned as Davis Cup captain after ten years in the job.
It’s very difficult to create top-level players. I think I have a newfound respect for what my parents did to create two players, one who was really good and another who was pretty good.”
