U. S. Open
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murrray play for a US Open quarter-final after both former tournament champions earned straight-set victories.
Top seed Djokovic, the winner in 2011 who has played the last four finals at Flushing Meadows, dominated 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 as the top seed stamped his authority on German Philipp Kohlschreiber. Murray, seeded eight and desperate for a title after lasting winning one at Wimbledon 14 months ago, notched his first victory over a top 10 opponent since summer, 2013, beating French ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 1 Djokovic has laid to rest lingering memories of his distracted build-up to the last major of the season, as he went out early last month in Toronto and Cincinnati, Ohio. He won with 34 winners and four breaks of serve to improve to 5-1 in the series.
He has now reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the 22nd straight time and eighth consecutive in New York. “I don’t think it would be nice to say it’s start of US Open now, that is total disrespect all of my opponents that I played against in the opening rounds,” Djokovic said in response to a question..
“I’ve been playing some really good tennis, really high quality so far, but it’s normal to expect that I’m going to have tougher opponents as the tournament goes on. It’s the way it is. But in order to get far in this tournament, I have to win against the best players in the world.”
The Serb owns a 12-8 margin over Murray in their career series, winning their last match in Miami in March.
Murray won in brutal humidity and heat to advance in just over two and a half hours, coming from 4-2 down in the second set over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 7-5, 6-4.
“Today was a good match for the most part, but, I feel like I’m playing well,” said Murray, who one week ago suffered badly with cramping. “I’m going to have to play extremely well to win the event or even just to get through the next match. A week ago I didn’t feel great at all. Now a week later I’m now in the quarters. A lot can happen in a few days.”
Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, seeded third, crashed into the stands a one point chasing a ball but shook it off in a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 defeat of Spain’s Tommy Robredo, with the winning striking 75 winners and 18 aces.
He will play Kei Nishikori, who beat Milos Raonic in a match which ended at a record-equaling 2:26 a.m., advancing 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 over the fifth-seeded Canadian, Two other matches, in 2012 and 1993 have also finished at that same time.

U. S. Open
Serena Williams has emerged as the lone elite seed remaining in the women’s quarter-finals after her 6-3, 6-3 dispatch of Estonian Kaia Kanepi. The 32-year-old is chasing a third straight New York and stands 5-1 against upcoming opponent Flavia Pennetta, who beat Casey Dellacqua of Australia 7-5, 6-2.
Williams takes a 5-1 record into her quarter-final against Italian Flavia Pennetta, who beat Casey Dellacqua of Australia 7-5, 6-2. “I’m a perfectionist. I always want to be the best, do the best,” said the top seed.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself to do well, particularly in the slams. I’m more relaxed. I feel like I don’t have to win any more – I’ve had a wonderful career. Tennis has given me so much, things I would have never expected in my life.” Williams has now won her last six matches against Pennetta dating to 2005.
Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard, who broke through with 2014 semi-finals in Melbourne and Paris, lost 7-6 (2) 6-4 to Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
The seventh seed was treated in the second set for heat illness, with a doctor called to the court after the fifth game to take her blood pressure. “I was feeling very light headed and dizzy on the court. just seeing things a little blurry,” said the Canadian. “Feeling well physically on the court is very important to me, I just generally didn’t feel good.
“It developed as the match went on. I’ve had a few late, tough matches here, and I don’t think I fully recovered from those.”
The 20-year-old is due to headline next week at a new WTA event in Hong Kong. She will also end with the most grand slam wins (19) of any WTA player this season.
“I’m always disappointed to lose, and especially. I didn’t have the highest expectations from myself for this tournament. Since Wimbledon it’s been a little bit of a struggle with nagging injuries, I’ve really cut down on practice time.
“With all that and with not feeling great in my tennis, I still battled to the second week of a slam. So there’s positives. After resting a little bit I’m going to hit the practice courts.”
Victoria Azarenka continues to find her way back after a foot injury this season, fighting off Serbian 145th-ranked qualifier Aleksandra Krunic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. on Monday to advance to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open.
The winner had to deal with 40 unforced errors in the effort which went for just under two and a half hours. Azarenka, finalist to Williams at the last two New York editions, next faced Makarova. “Aleksandra played some amazing tennis. She has a great future,” Azarenka said. “I think it’s never easy to play someone you don’t know. I just tried to stay positive and fight.”
