Singles – Third Round: (1) N Djokovic def. S Querrey 6-3 6-2 6-2
By the looks of things, Novak Djokovic’s little summer vacation is over, and he’s back at work. He leaves Sam Querrey still a little below the Top Fifty — but at least Querrey seems finally to be going in the right direction.
Singles – Third Round: (3) S Wawrinka def. B Kavcic walkover
Nine retirements or bailouts here. Just in the singles. What an event! This slightly strengthens Stan Wawrinka’s grip on the #4 ranking, but probably not enough to make a difference.
Singles – Third Round: (6) M Raonic def. V Estrella Burgos 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-3)
This really makes you wonder what might have happened had Victor Estrella Burgos come from a nation with a genuine tennis tradition. Or even just been able to play more Slams in the past. He should hit another career high of about #70. Milos Raonic is still at #6 in safe points, and needs at least two more wins to climb.
Singles – Third Round: (8) A Murray def. And. Kuznetsov 6-1 7-5 4-6 6-2
Yet another struggle for Andy Murray in a match where he should not have struggled. And he still hasn’t clinched his Top Ten ranking.
Singles – Third Round: (9) J Tsonga def. P Carreno Busta 6-4 6-4 6-4
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continues to maintain his lead on Andy Murray. What is really interesting is that they face each other next. And they’re 130 points apart, and that match by itself is worth 180. So the winner will likely be #9, and the loser no better than #10 and in danger of losing even the #10 spot. Especially given this next result:
Singles – Third Round: (10) K Nishikori def. (23) L Mayer 6-4 6-2 6-3
Maybe Kei Nishikori should get all his toes operated on, given how well having surgery on one of them worked! He was the first player to reach the fourth round, putting Andy Murray under truly intense pressure in the contest for the last Top Ten spot. Murray still has the #10 ranking, but from now on, if Nishikori can outlast him, Nishikori will be #10. (Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a little more secure; Nishikori needs a semifinal to pass him no matter what.) Leonardo Mayer added points, but the best he can hope for is to reach #25, and he might end up lower.
Singles – Third Round: (22) P Kohlschreiber def. (13) J Isner 7-6(7-4) 4-6 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-4)
John Isner had a dozen break chances in this match, but converted only one. Philipp Kohlschreiber had fewer, and converted none at all — but successfully pounced in the tiebreaks. It was a pretty disappointing performance by Isner — although not exactly an unexpected one; it’s the third year in a row that the two have met in the third round of the Open, and the third time Kohlschreiber has won. Isner won’t rise above his current #15; he still might fall. Kohlschreiber has also exactly matched his result from last year — but in his case, that’s likely to gain him a ranking spot, to #24.
It is the second straight year that no American male has reached the fourth round. It is also only the second time in history that that has happened.
Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Donaldson/Russell 6-1 6-2
Talk about an odd couple: Jared Donaldson, 17 years old and 6’2″. Michael Russell, 36 years old and 5’8″. The combination wasn’t particularly effective, obviously; the Bryans take another small step toward the year-end #1.
Doubles – Second Round: (2) Peya/Soares def. Groth/Guccione 7-6(7-5) 6-4
Groth and Guccione have had a solid summer, so this is a nice win for Peya/Soares, but they remain far behind Nestor and Zimonjic in the contest for the #3 and #4 rankings.
Doubles – Second Round: (4) Dodig/Melo def. Lajovic/Sousa 7-6(7-1) 7-5
Dodig/Melo looked a little more comfortable than in the previous round, but they still need two more wins to defend their points, and Ivan Dodig still faces a possibility that he will fall out of the Top Ten. We currently show the Top Twelve as follows:
1..(1) Bryan…………..9990
1..(1) Bryan…………..9990
3..(5) Nestor………….6070
4..(7) Zimonjic………..5910
5..(3) Peya……………5510
5..(3) Soares………….5510
7..(6) Melo……………5330
8..(9) Roger-Vasselin…..4740
9..(8) Dodig…………..4420
10.(10) Benneteau……….4290
11.(13) Marrero…………4190
12.(14) Verdasco………..3920
Doubles – Second Round: (8) Pospisil/Sock def. Draganja/Mergea 6-4 6-2
It really looks as if Jack Sock will make the Top Fifteen here. Vasek Pospisil will need more than this to make it, but they continue to look very strong; it could well happen.
Doubles – Second Round: (9) Rojer/Tecau def. Struff/Thiem 4-6 6-3 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: (11) Granollers/M Lopez def. Haase/Sijsling 6-4 7-5
One more win might put Marcel Granollers in the Top Fifteen. Marc Lopez is a few places below that.
Doubles – Second Round: Klahn/Smyczek def. Becker/Sitak 4-6 7-5 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Peschke/Matkowski def. Raymond/Lipsky 4-6 6-3 11-9
You name it, this match involved craziness. It wasn’t even supposed to happen; Raymond/Lipsky only got into the draw because of withdrawals (Koukalova/Levinsky and Raymond/Lipsky replaced Cornet/Huey and Hingis/Lindstedt.) Having made it onto the schedule, this had to be put off on Friday because Lisa Raymond’s regular doubles match was so late. It makes you wonder what might have happened had the schedule been kinder; Peschke/Matkowski would have been the #4 seeds under Mixed, so Raymond/Lipsky perhaps could have been a threat had they gotten a slightly different draw.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (1) Mirza/Soares def. Dellacqua/J Murray 6-2 7-6(10-8)
This should have been over much earlier. Mirza/Soares had the chance to serve out the second set, and failed. Which perhaps explains why mixed rankings would have demoted Mirza/Soares, although they would still be well ahead of Dellacqua/Murray. Perhaps lucky for them that Dellacqua and Murray both lost too early in ordinary doubles, although Dellacqua did just fine in singles.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Black/Paes def. Kudryavtseva/Qureshi 6-1 4-6 10-4
Evidently Cara Black’s big comeback isn’t just in women’s doubles; it’s in Mixed as well.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Spears/S Gonzalez def. An. Rodionova/Farah 5-7 6-3 11-9
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Y Chan/Hutchins def. Oudin/R Ram 6-2 2-6 13-11
Four of this day’s Mixed matches went to Match Tiebreaks. Three of them went past 9-9 in the match tiebreak. Maybe the reason Mixed rankings don’t seem to be working here is that all the teams are almost exactly equal in ability!
