SERENA WINS IN STRAIGHT SETS ,BOUCHARD WINS IN 3

U.S . OPEN

Singles – Third Round: (1) Serena Williams def. Varvara Lepchenko 6-3 6-3

Serena seemed to be rather off in this match, but as she so often does, she found a way to come through. With her leading rivals out (see below), she is finally making a push to earn the year-end #1. She leaves Varvara Lepchenko a little above #45.

Singles – Third Round: Aleksandra Krunic def. (3) Petra Kvitova 6-4 6-4

So maybe it isn’t just the even-numbered seeds who are in trouble around here. It’s everybody. Aleksandra Krunic had a very simple strategy: Keep getting the ball back and wait for Petra Kvitova to make an error. And Kvitova obliged. Which means that Kvitova will not be reaching #2. She will reach #3 only if Maria Sharapova loses before the semifinal. She will probably manage to stay #4 at least, although it is still theoretically possible that she could fall to #5. Aleksandra Krunic, who earns the best result of her career, had the misfortune to be defending one of the other best results of her career, so she doesn’t climb as much as you might think, even though her points here are the equivalent of two-thirds of her previous total; she will rise from #145 to right around #100.

Singles – Third Round: (7) Eugenie Bouchard def. (30) Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2 6-7(2-7) 6-4

The weather turned very windy in this match, and it almost proved an equalizer — the first three games of the second set lasted twenty minutes (the whole set lasted an hour and ten minutes), and ended with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova up a break. Eugenie Bouchard eventually got things back under control, then slipped up again in the tiebreak. Up a break in the third, she let things slip back to 4-4. It was as if she didn’t want to win, but she finally did. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, despite adding a hundred points, apparently won’t hit a career high — but she ought to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: (11) Flavia Pennetta def. Nicole Gibbs 6-4 6-0

This lets Flavia Pennetta move back ahead of Venus Williams, meaning that she will likely be #17 next week. One more win might keep her Top Fifteen. Nicole Gibbs will likely be just below #100.

Singles – Third Round: Kaia Kanepi def. (15) Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-0

It took Kaia Kanepi a while to get into her Upset gear, but eventually she made it. That will cost Carla Suarez Navarro her #16 ranking; the best she can hope for is #17. Kanepi earns enough points to stay Top Fifty (we show her at #45) — at least until her next injury.

Singles – Third Round: (16) Victoria Azarenka def. Elena Vesnina 6-1 6-1

At this rate, maybe Victoria Azarenka will return to the U. S. Open final. She’s still near the bottom of the Top Thirty, but with this, she has assured that she will stay Top Thirty. Elena Vesnina will end up just below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Third Round: (17) Ekaterina Makarova def. Zarina Diyas 6-2 6-4

Ekaterina Makarova had a bad patch at the start of the second set, going down a break, before reasserting control. And she still needs one more win to keep the #18 ranking she came in with, although her Top Twenty spot looks safe. She leaves Zarina Diyas, who has been rising steadily if slowly, within one spot of #40 — a career high.

Singles – Third Round: (29) Casey Dellacqua def. Karolina Pliskova 6-3 3-6 6-4

That clinches it: Casey Dellacqua will be Top Thirty after the U. S. Open. The player in danger of falling below that is now Sabine Lisicki, who is down to #30 in safe points. Karolina Pliskova, like Dellacqua, should reach a career high — we show her at #35.

Doubles – Second Round: Gajdosova/Tomljanovic def. (1) Errani/Vinci 6-4 1-6 6-4

When Sara Errani heard that all the commentators expected her to lose to Venus Williams in singles, it got her fired up and she won. But, here, she was expected to win — and she lost. Almost as if the universe required some sort of balance. It won’t cost Errani/Vinci the #1 ranking, but neither will they clinch the year-end #1 spot just yet.

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Hsieh/Peng def. Jurak/Moulton-Levy 6-4 6-2

Hsieh/Peng cannot overtake Errani/Vinci this week, but at least they’re trying to keep the contest for the year-end #1 interesting.

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Black/Mirza def. Garcia/Niculescu 6-1 6-2

Black and Mirza haven’t clinched the co-#5 ranking yet, but it now looks very likely indeed. We currently show the Top Twelve as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….10050

1..(1) VINCI …………. 10050

3..(3) PENG ……………7785*

4..(4) HSIEH …………. 7745*

5..(5) MIRZA …………. 5425*

5..(6) BLACK …………. 5425*

7..(7) SREBOTNIK ……… 4595*

8..(8) VESNINA ……….. 4430*

9..(9) MAKAROVA ………..4410*

10.(11) PESCHKE ……….. 4345*

11.(14) KOPS-JONES ………4150

12.(14) SPEARS ………….4150

Doubles – Second Round: (9) Kudryavtseva/Rodionova def. Cirstea/Parmentier 6-2 6-2

Kudryavtseva/Rodionova still aren’t Top Fifteen, but it feels more and more as if they’ll get there — and qualify for the year-end Championships as well, now that eight teams qualify.

Doubles – Second Round: (11) Hradecka/Krajicek def. Husarova/Kania 6-3 6-2

Eight straight wins for Lucie Hradecka here, but she is still far below the Top Twenty.

Doubles – Second Round: Jankovic/Koukalova def. (13) Medina Garrigues/Shvedova 4-6 6-2 7-5

Jelena Jankovic understandably doesn’t play a lot of doubles, but over the years, she had learned to be a pretty good doubles player. So this isn’t a big surprise.

Doubles – Second Round: Hingis/Pennetta def. (15) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 6-3 6-0

It’s really too bad Martina Hingis didn’t manage to find a partner at the start of the year and stick with her. She would very likely be on her way to qualifying for the year-end Championship.

Doubles – Second Round: Dabrowski/Rosolska def. Doi/Svitolina 4-6 6-2 6-4

Check out these Mixed a Results.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Peschke/Matkowski def. Raymond/Lipsky 4-6 6-3 11-9

You name it, this match involved craziness. It wasn’t even supposed to happen; Raymond/Lipsky only got into the draw because of withdrawals (Koukalova/Levinsky and Raymond/Lipsky replaced Cornet/Huey and Hingis/Lindstedt.) Having made it onto the schedule, this had to be put off on Friday because Lisa Raymond’s regular doubles match was so late. It makes you wonder what might have happened had the schedule been kinder; Peschke/Matkowski would have been the #4 seeds under Mixed, so Raymond/Lipsky perhaps could have been a threat had they gotten a slightly different draw.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (1) Mirza/Soares def. Dellacqua/J Murray 6-2 7-6(10-8)

This should have been over much earlier. Mirza/Soares had the chance to serve out the second set, and failed. Which perhaps explains why mixed rankings would have demoted Mirza/Soares, although they would still be well ahead of Dellacqua/Murray. Perhaps lucky for them that Dellacqua and Murray both lost too early in ordinary doubles, although Dellacqua did just fine in singles.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Black/Paes def. Kudryavtseva/Qureshi 6-1 4-6 10-4

Evidently Cara Black’s big comeback isn’t just in women’s doubles; it’s in Mixed as well.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Spears/S Gonzalez def. An. Rodionova/Farah 5-7 6-3 11-9

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Y Chan/Hutchins def. Oudin/R Ram 6-2 2-6 13-11

Four of this day’s Mixed matches went to Match Tiebreaks. Three of them went past 9-9 in the match tiebreak. Maybe the reason Mixed rankings don’t seem to be working here is that all the teams are almost exactly equal in ability!
