ROGER FEDERER WINS IN STRAIGHT SETS AS DOES BERDYCH , DIMITROV , & MORE MEN'S RESULTS & SCORES

Roger Federer Is Betterer. He Just Is.

U. S. Open

Singles – Second Round: (2) R Federer def. S Groth 6-4 6-4 6-4

In the first few games of this, it seemed as if Roger Federer was really struggling to deal with Samuel Groth’s serve. True, Federer was having no trouble at all on his own (except for a bad moment in the third set when he was broken) — but he didn’t really seem like Roger Federer. Nonetheless, he keeps alive his faint hopes of rising to #2.

Singles – Second Round: (4) D Ferrer def. B Tomic walkover

Bernard Tomic’s hip is hurting (a danger sign for him), plus he hasn’t been feeling well. So he pulled out as a precaution. Once again Nick Kyrgios is the last Australian standing at a Slam…. David Ferrer hasn’t clinched his Top Five spot yet, but obviously free points help.

Singles – Second Round: (6) T Berdych def. M Klizan 6-3 4-6 6-2 3-6 6-3

When the Ferrer match didn’t come off, they moved this contest onto Ashe Stadium. You’d think that would have troubled Martin Klizan, who rarely gets to play on show courts, but instead, it seemed to mess up Tomas Berdych. He came through, obviously, but how will he do against tougher opposition? And he needs at least two more wins to rise above his current #7.

Singles – Second Round: (7) G Dimitrov def. D Sela 6-1 6-2 6-2

A distinct improvement from last year for Grigor Dimitrov; in 2013, he lost his opener. But, so far, it makes no rankings difference at all.

Singles – Second Round: D Thiem def. (11) E Gulbis 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-3

Earlier this week, Ernests Gulbis was quoted as saying it wasn’t smart to think too much about tennis. Maybe he will want to rethink that. He loses his chance to rise above #12, although he isn’t likely to fall. Dominic Thiem now looks very likely to hit the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (14) M Cilic def. I Marchenko 7-6(7-2) 6-2 6-4

Marin Cilic moves back ahead of John Isner in the contest for the #14 ranking. It’s possible that both of them will be Top Fifteen, but the one who lasts longer is just about assured of a Top Fifteen spot. (And neither has much chance of moving higher than #14; they need a semifinal to make it to #13).

Singles – Second Round: A Mannarino def. (15) F Fognini 6-3 6-4 6-1

Most of Fabio Fognini’s points come from clay; last year, he lost his opener here. So it’s no great surprise that he didn’t hold his seed — although losing to Adrian Mannarino is rather stunning. Fognini loses his chance to hit the Top Fifteen; the best he can hope for is #16.

Singles – Second Round: (18) K Anderson def. J Janowicz 6-7(6-8) 6-2 6-1 6-3

That’s the second straight tough match for Kevin Anderson; it will be interesting to see how much longer he can keep this up. His Top Twenty spot looks fairly safe, though. Jerzy Janowicz will likely be just below the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (19) F Lopez def. T Ito 6-4 3-6 6-4 7-6(7-4)

Surprisingly tough for Feliciano Lopez, but he succeeds in defending his points.

Singles – Second Round: (12) R Gasquet def. P Lorenzi 7-6(7-4) 6-3 6-3

This was easier than Richard Gasquet’s previous match, but by no means trivial, and he’s still only #20 in safe points. It continues to look as if he could be in trouble.

Singles – Second Round: (17) R Bautista Agut def. T Smyczek 6-3 6-2 6-1

Roberto Bautista Agut improves on his result from last year, but there are so many players still active in the #14-#22 range that it’s really to soon even to guess where he will end up.

Singles – Second Round: (20) G Monfils def. A Gonzalez 7-5 6-3 6-2

Gael Monfils lost second round last year, so he’s starting to move. Two more wins and he’s likely to hit the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: M Granollers def. (25) I Karlovic 7-6(8-6) 6-7(3-7) 7-6(7-5) 3-6 6-4

Ivo Karlovic had all sorts of chances the first time Marcel Granollers served in the fifth set. He failed to convert, and it was all downhill from there. He matched his result from last year — but, last year, he did it as a qualifier, so he loses a few points. Just enough to drop him out of the Top Thirty. Marcel Granollers still needs one more win to defend his points, but this will keep him Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (26) G Simon def. F Delbonis 6-4 3-6 7-5 6-1

It is now absolutely certain that Gilles Simon will return to the Top Thirty; he’s up to #28 in safe points. Federico Delbonis will be around #60.

Singles – Second Round: D Goffin def. (32) J Sousa 6-4 6-2 6-0

Joao Sousa has been slumping all summer, and just barely survived his opener. So no surprise here. But this will cost him at least one ranking spot, and it might be one or two more. David Goffin will be hitting the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: T Gabashvili def. A Kudryavtsev 6-1 6-4 7-6(7-4)

This won’t put Teymuraz Gabashvili in the Top Fifty, but one more win should do it.

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Nestor/Zimonjic def. Barrientos/Giraldo 6-2 6-2

Another step toward the #3 and #4 rankings for Nestor and Zimonjic. This win means that Peya/Soares now need a final to have any hope of staying ahead of Nestor in the contest for #3.

Doubles – Second Round: (6) Paes/Stepanek def. Lu/Vesely 7-6(7-3) 6-3

Eight straight wins here for Paes/Stepanek, but that still leaves them below #20.

Doubles – Second Round: (7) Marrero/Verdasco def. Pavic/Sa 7-6(7-4) 7-5

Fernando Verdasco lost much too soon in singles, but maybe this is some consolation. One more win might put David Marrero in the Top Ten, and Verdasco isn’t very far behind. We currently show the Top Twelve as follows:

1..(1) Bryan…………..9900

1..(1) Bryan…………..9900

3..(5) Nestor………….6070

4..(7) Zimonjic………..5910

5..(3) Peya……………5420

5..(3) Soares………….5420

7..(6) Melo……………5240

8..(9) Roger-Vasselin…..4740

9..(8) Dodig…………..4330

10.(10) Benneteau……….4290

11.(13) Marrero…………4190

12.(14) Verdasco………..3920

Doubles – Second Round: (12) Butorac/Klaasen def. Lindstedt/Melzer 6-7(5-7) 6-2 1-0, retired

Robert Lindstedt’s horrid year continues. More than half his points are from the Australian Open. He’ll likely be in big trouble next January.

Doubles – Second Round: Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. (16) Cabal/Farah 4-6 6-4 6-4

It will tell you what this year has been like for Fyrstenberg/Matkowski that Cabal/Farah, and not the Poles, were seeded. Maybe this will help a little.

Doubles – Second Round: Garcia-Lopez/Oswald def. Emmrich/Rosol 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: Kukushkin/Venus def. Bracciali/Seppi 6-2 6-4

Neither of these teams is seeded, but this is still a big upset.

Doubles – Second Round: Lipsky/R Ram def. Mmoh/Tiafoe 6-1 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Hlavackova/Peya def. Parra Santonja/Marrero 6-3 5-7 11-9

Mixed rankings would have demoted Hlavackova/Peya to unseeded, so perhaps it’s not surprising that they struggled. Or maybe it’s just that Andrea Hlavackova hasn’t done much in any sort of doubles since winning the U. S. Open last year.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: H Chan/Mirnyi def. (5) Hradecka/Tecau 6-3 6-3

Mixed rankings would have promoted Chan/Mirnyi to a seed — but would have promoted Hradecka/Tecau to the #3 seeds. So this is perhaps a wash for Mixed rankings.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: An. Rodionova/Farah def. (8) Kops-Jones/Cabal 4-6 6-3 10-5

Finally a result that clearly supports the Mixed rankings, which would have demoted Kops-Jones/Cabal to unseeded.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Barty/Peers def. Muhammed/Fritz 6-2 6-2

Barty and Peers both lost early in the regular doubles. Maybe that explains how the Americans managed to win four games. Otherwise, we’d have expected a score closer to 6-1 6-0.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Medina Garrigues/Klaasen def. Krajicek/Draganja 7-6(7-1) 6-2

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Townsend/Young def. Cako/Kielbowicz 7-5 6-3

Cako/Kielbowicz were the Mixed Doubles Playoff winners. So they had the thrill of being able to play in a Slam. But they obviously couldn’t do much with their Big Chance.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Spears/S Gonzalez def. Babos/Butorac 7-6(8-6) 1-6 10-5

Spears/Gonzalez fell just one spot short of seeding under Mixed rankings, so perhaps this is a slight bit of support for Mixed — but only very slight.

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
