Attendance for the New Haven WTA event reached 47,140 this year, an increase from 45,796 a year ago.
It was the first increase the tournament has had since 2005, though still less than the 76,860 it drew as a combined event in 2010. Tournament officials attributed the change to having 11 of the top 25 WTA players, including Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova winning the event, as well as a men’s legends exhibition event that featured local favorite James Blake and Andy Roddick. The tournament also improved its food offerings this year in an attempt to draw spectators.
However, the 3,285 attendance for the women’s final was the record lowest for the tournament. We applaud Andrew Krasny. He adds so much to any and all events he does as the on court announcer. We caught some of the US Open Kids day. The players looked nervous everytime a ridiculous question came out of the guy doing the on court “miked up stuff.” Krasny is the best around these days. Between his knowledge of tennis. The players personalities and His charm wit and his sense of humor he is worth the price of admission.
The men’s exhibition event is likely to return next year and could become a full seniors event. We know the tourney needs men players. Legends or current male players. We suggest doing like the “Boodles ” does in London prior to Wimbledon by bringing in players that want a match or two. A full exo form with lots of flexibility.
The improved figures are a positive development for the tournament as it attempts to return to financial sufficiency. The state government stepped in a year ago to stop it from being sold, spending $618,000 to keep the tournament. It also spent $600,000 on running the tournament this year and $1.2 million in capital improvements, according to tournament figures cited by AP. The tournament also has signed a presenting sponsor, United Technologies.
The tournament costs $4 million to hold, according to a state figure, and has $26 million in economic impact.
