Serena Williams has had some memorable matches against Sloane Stephens in the last couple of years and now she faces another player who views her as an iconic role model after being drawn to face 18 year-old Taylor Townsend in the US Open first round.
Townsend, currently ranked 103rd and the 13th best American, has been handed a wild card into the event after contesting the two previous majors; this years French Open where she reached the third round, and Wimbledon where she was soundly beaten in the first.
Nevertheless Williams, a two times US Open singles champion, is taking nothing for granted after three disappointments at the majors this year.
Speaking after Thursdays draw the world no.1 and top seed said: ‘The way my year’s been going, I’m worried about every single match.
Williams seemed considerably more self-confident as she sang karaoke style the song made famous by Marilyn Monroe, Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend at the Open Mic event staged by Delta Airways in New York.
She was joined at the event, held at the Arena located close to Times Square at West 41st Street, by was joined by fellow tennis player Jack Sock, “Orange Is the New Black” stars Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba, “Glee” actor Darren Criss and comedian Kathy Griffin.
