New Haven

Singles – Second Round: Samantha Stosur def. (3) Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-2

The post-Wimbledon horrors continue for Eugenie Bouchard. This was almost as lopsided as the score. Not how Bouchard wanted to go into the U. S. Open! She won less than half her service points — even on first serves, she won only 51% of the points. Bouchard loses her chance to rise above #8; Samantha Stosur should rise from #25 to #22.

Singles – Second Round: Camila Giorgi def. (4) Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-2

Look who is posting upsets again. If Camila Giorgi only had a clue how she does it, she could really go places. Even in the absence of a clue, she will rise to probably #36. Caroline Wozniacki was going to be #11 no matter what happened here, but this leaves her a pretty weak #11; her odds of climbing at the U. S. Open are significantly less after this — she was defending semifinalist points. That apart from the embarrassment of losing so early at an event she had won four times.

The result means that there are no seeds at all left in the top half. Indeed, the only seed left in the whole draw is Petra Kvitova. Which sounds like a recipe for having all the seeds vanish soon….

Singles – Second Round: Garbine Muguruza def. (Q) Peng Shuai 6-2 3-6 6-3

Although Garbine Muguruza is adding points, she still hasn’t added enough to budge her ranking. But if she can win one more match, she’ll hit the Top 25 — and she is the highest-ranked player left in the top half. She leaves Peng Shuai #39 or #40.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) Kirsten Flipkens def. (WC) Andrea Petkovic 4-6 7-6(7-4) 7-6(8-6)

This really put a crimp in the schedule, lasting more than three hours. (There were times when we were sure the scoreboard had conked out, it went so slowly.) Kirsten Flipkens served for the match at 5-4 in the third, and was broken. She had match point on serve in the tiebreak, and blew that. Then Andrea Petkovic gave her another match point on serve at 7-6. Flipkens obviously lost her concentration at that point, because she accidentally didn’t blow the match point. She leaves Andrea Petkovic still stuck at #19. Flipkens will rise at most one spot, to #46. Hard to believe she’ll have anything left for Thursday, though. Which is probably a mercy — at least for the officials who had to work through this.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Jurak/Moulton-Levy def. Riske/Vandeweghe 7-6(7-4) 1-6 10-8

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Klepac/Soler-Espinosa def. Dellacqua/Voegele 6-3 2-6 10-6

A somewhat surprising result, since Casey Dellacqua is much the best doubles player of these four. But she chose a weak partner.
