Ivanisevic, Rusedski Deliver US Open Verdicts: Djokovic again, and Williams’ 18th

With a week to go until the US Open, two ATP Champions Tour stars have delivered their predictions for the final Grand Slam of the year while competing at the Optima Open in Knokke-Heist.

The 1997 US Open finalist Greg Rusedski and 2001 Wimbledon Champion Goran Ivanisevic were in agreement that Novak Djokovic would overcome a recent run of poor form to lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows.

‘I think it has to be Djokovic still,’ said Ivanisevic. ‘I know he hasn’t been in the best form since Wimbledon but none of the top players have been really. It’s hard to go against him on a hard court over five sets.’

On the women’s side Ivanisevic and Rusedski again agreed, picking Serena Williams to come back from a relatively 2014 season and capture another US Open title. It would be an 18th Grand Slam crown overall, drawing her level with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

In today’s matches at the Royal Zoute Tennis Club Ivanisevic defeated Cash 6-4, 6-4 in a repeat of the 2010 Optima Open final, and in the second match of the day Rusedski overcame Henri Leconte 7-5, 6-3.

Sunday’s order of play will feature the final between Xavier Malisse and Fabrice Santoro, and also a second exhibition doubles match between the pairings of John McEnroe and Monica Seles and Mansour Banhrami and Kim Clijsters.
