* Berdych out of Top Five after loss to Lu
* Janowicz upsets Dimitrov to make bid for Top Fifty return
* Johnson blocks Gulbis’s Top Ten hopes
Cincinnati
Singles – Second Round: (2) R Federer def. V Pospisil 7-6(7-4) 5-7 6-2
Roger Federer’s little lapse in the second set meant that he had to spend more than two hours on the court — hardly what he wanted after his long week in Toronto. But he survived to keep his lead on Stanislas Wawrinka in the contest for #3. Vasek Pospisil will end up around #45; obviously he won’t be earning a U. S. Open seed.
The win is reported to be #300 at a Masters for Federer, the most by any player.
Singles – Second Round: Y Lu def. (4) T Berdych 3-6 6-3 6-4
If being Tomas Berdych’s coach isn’t the most maddening job in tennis, it has to be way, way up there. The complete impossibility of predicting any result would drive us nuts…. In this case, because Berdych was defending quarterfinalist points, that will cost him the #5 ranking. He will be no better than #6, with David Ferrer our likely new #5. It’s a difference that may make no difference — but if Rafael Nadal pulls out of the U. S. Open, the loss will cost Berdych his shot at the #4 seed. Yen-Hsun Lu, #43 coming in, ought to rise to at least #38 and very likely higher. One ore win would probably earn him an Open seed.
Singles – Second Round: (5) M Raonic def. (WC) R Ginepri 6-2 6-2
This was one of the day’s last matches, but definitely not a very exciting one. It does keep alive the possibility of Milos Raonic passing Tomas Berdych, which would drop Berdych all the way to #7, but Raonic still needs two more wins for that.
Singles – Second Round: (6) D Ferrer def. P Kohlschreiber 6-7(4-7) 7-6(7-4) 7-6(7-4)
This was scary for both players — Philipp Kohlschreiber led by a break for much of the second set, but couldn’t finish things off. That will cause him to drop from #24 to #25 — but probably not lower; he is more than 400 points ahead of the next active player (Lu). So he should earn a Top 24 Open seed. David Ferrer, as we saw above, is up to #5 in safe points, but there is still a possibility that Milos Raonic could pass him; every point he earns strengthens his grip on the spot.
Singles – Second Round: J Janowicz def. (7) G Dimitrov 6-4 3-6 6-3
This result came across the scoreboard at almost the same instance as the Berdych result; we’re not even sure which came first. We are sure that this is less likely to be a big deal. There is a faint chance that Grigor Dimitrov will lose his #8 ranking, but only if Andy Murray makes the Cincinnati final. And, even then, Dimitrov would be a Top Eight Open seed if Nadal withdraws. Jerzy Janowicz, who is down below #65, seems finally to be bidding to get his Top Fifty spot back.
Singles – Second Round: (8) A Murray def. J Sousa 6-3 6-3
This ends Joao Sousa’s hopes for a U. S. Open seed. He’ll be no better than #35, and that surely won’t be good enough. Andy Murray is still at #9, but has an outside chance of moving up.
Singles – Second Round: (WC) S Johnson def. (9) E Gulbis 6-4 6-4
What was this, let’s-pick-on-the-screwballs day? First Berdych, then Ernests Gulbis. For Gulbis, this means no Top Ten spot; he will probably be #12. Steve Johnson is bidding to be the latest new American #2.
Singles – Second Round: (11) J Isner def. (Q) M Matosevic 6-3 7-6(7-1)
John Isner improves his odds of staying Top Fifteen (which now look pretty good) — but he has a long, long way to go if he wants to keep his current #14 ranking.
Singles – Second Round: G Monfils def. (13) R Bautista Agut 6-4 6-1
This was an odd match because unseeded Gael Monfils, although only a year and a half older than his seeded opponent, has had a far more noteworthy career, and probably would have been considered the favorite by most watchers. The surface probably helped, too. Roberto Bautista Agut may rise to #17, which would assure him the #16 U. S. Open seed, but it isn’t sure; Monfils is now about a hundred points from the Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: (14) M Cilic def. F Verdasco 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-5)
So near but (probably) so far from a U. S. Open seed for Fernando Verdasco. This will likely leave him at #34 — and while #33 will be seeded (because Juan Martin del Potro won’t play), #34 will require someone else to withdraw. Marin Cilic now looks like a sure bet for one of the top sixteen seeds.
Singles – Second Round: (15) F Fognini def. L Hewitt 6-1 6-4
This is one of the few events recently where Fabio Fognini has done better this year than last. It doesn’t guarantee him a return to the Top Twenty, but he keeps the possibility alive. Lleyton Hewitt will probably reach the Top Forty, but with a very small margin to spare, and he won’t be seeded at the U. S. Open.
Singles – Second Round: (16) T Robredo def. (WC) S Querrey 6-2 6-4
For Sam Querrey, this means no possibility of a return to the Top Fifty, or of regaining his status as the #2 American. Tommy Robredo, though, defends his points and keeps alive his hopes for a return to the Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: M Youzhny def. A Seppi 6-3 6-4
Andreas Seppi came here just below the Top Fifty, and it looks as if he’ll stay around there. Mikhail Youzhny is fighting for a Top 24 U. S. Open seed; this put him ahead of Philipp Kohlschreiber in the contest for #24, but with Kohlschreiber still to play. With Kohlschreiber out, Youzhny is safe.
Singles – Second Round: J Benneteau def. (Q) J Ward 6-2 6-2
Julien Benneteau defends his points, leaving him probably just below the Top Forty.
Doubles – First Round: Butorac/Klaasen def. F Lopez/Melzer 6-4 6-3
Doubles – Second Round: Lindstedt/Matkowski def. (4) Dodig/Melo 6-2 6-4
After a good result last week, this is a significant letdown for Dodig/Melo.
Doubles – Second Round: (3) Nestor/Zimonjic def. Garcia-Lopez/Giraldo 6-2 6-3
Doubles – Second Round: Pospisil/Sock def. (5) Paes/Stepanek 6-1 4-6 10-8
A lot of teams are probably going to be very glad when Pospisil/Sock start getting seeded.
Doubles – Second Round: (6) Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. Cabal/Robredo 1-6 6-4 10-7
Doubles – Second Round: Rojer/Tecau def. (7) Granollers/M Lopez 7-5 7-6(7-5)
Surprising that Rojer/Tecau aren’t seeded here. This is a very tough draw,
