It could be a long week for Roger Federer at the Rogers Cup, with a Masters 1000 event to play, a 33rd birthday to celebrate on Friday, a hockey game on Sunday, and plenty of fanfare surrounding the new paint-job on his racket. Federer wasted no time, however, in getting off the court in his first match on Tuesday night. The Swiss cruised past Canadian wild card Peter Polansky 6-2, 6-0 in a mere 52 minutes.
Federer broke serve six times in seven return games and converted all six of his break chances. He gave back a break right away at 1-0 in the opening set, but he dominated the rest of the way and dropped only four service points in the entire second frame of play.
“I was happy,” Federer assured. “I started well and that’s always helpful to play more freely,” he said. “I think I could have served better at times, but other than that, already in practice I felt I was moving well. Didn’t feel so good hitting the ball yet. Wasn’t quite getting used to the surface, and now the last few days have been much better and I’m happy that in the match it kind of all worked really well.”
Fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, on the other hand, had to shift way out of cruise-control mode. In fact, Wawrinka was one point away from defeat but erased a match point with an ace at 4-5 in the third set en route to edging good friend Benoit Paire 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(2).
Wawrinka awaits either Fabio Fognini or Kevin Anderson in the third round. Federer will bid for a place in the quarterfinals against either Marin Cilic or Malek Jaziri.
