Kitzbuhel
Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) D Thiem def. (2) M Granollers 6-4 7-5
Dominic Thiem is clearly trying for a Newcomer of the Year award. He just keeps climbing — and, with this, he reaches his first ATP semifinal. He costs Marcel Granollers, last year’s champion, his Top Thirty spot — and, possibly, his U. S. Open seed; Granollers will be no better than #35 after this.
Singles – Quarterfinal: J Monaco def. (4) A Seppi 6-2 3-6 6-3
The length of this probably wasn’t good news for Juan Monaco — he spent only a minute and a half longer on the court than his next opponent Thiem, but he’s a lot older — but the result was good. He’s now absolutely sure to stay Top Hundred. But Andreas Seppi, because he had first a bye and then a walkover, leaves here with no points at all and will stay at the bottom of the Top Fifty.
Singles – Semifinal: (5) D Thiem def. J Monaco 6-3 6-1
Dominic Thiem is already the youngest player in the Top Fifty. Can he become the youngest in the Top Forty? With this, we show him up to #44, and a title would make him probably #38. Juan Monaco, last year’s finalist, will fall to around #95.
Singles – Semifinal: (WC) D Goffin def. (Q) M Gonzalez 5-7 6-4 6-3
This result means that we have two first-time finalists here, which obviously means we’ll have a first-time champion as well. And the level of rest for the two is probably about equal — David Goffin had much the longer semifinal, but he didn’t have to play two matches in one day. This win will probably take him above #60.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Emmrich/Rosol def. (WC) Melzer/Melzer 6-4 6-3
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Dlouhy/Marray def. (4) Begemann/Haase 6-2 3-6 10-7
Doubles – Semifinal: Bracciali/Golubev def. (3) Emmrich/Rosol 6-3 2-6 10-4
Doubles – Semifinal: Kontinen/Nieminen def. Dlouhy/Marray 3-6 7-6(7-4) 10-7
Washington
This seems to be the Week When Nothing Finished On Time. The late match, Pospisil versus Giraldo, had to be suspended with the two tied after two sets. Which means that they will have to come back at 1:00 and play the final set, then the winner will have to play Richard Gasquet in the evening.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) M Raonic def. S Johnson 7-6(7-2) 6-2
All right, cancel Steve Johnson’s ascent to the status of #2 American. He’ll have to settle for #3 (more on this below). Milos Raonic moves to within one win of passing David Ferrer to gain the #6 spot.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) R Gasquet def. (4) K Nishikori 6-1 6-4
Kei Nishikori didn’t look much like a guy going for #10 here; this was over in just less than an hour. And it means that Nishikori won’t be making the Top Ten; he’ll stay stuck at #11. It’s Richard Gasquet who rises; this takes him past John Isner into the #13 ranking. Isner will be falling from #12 to #14.
Singles – Quarterfinal: D Young def. (7) K Anderson 3-6 7-6(7-3) 6-2
Maybe we should have taken the idea of Donald Young as the American #2 more seriously. Kevin Anderson will remain below the Top Twenty, but Young moves past Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson; he is on the brink of the Top Fifty. If he makes it, he will of course be the only American Top Fifty player other than John Isner. As of now, the top five Americans are, in order, Isner, Young, Johnson, Sock, and Querrey. And to think Querrey was the #2 less than two weeks ago!
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Johnson/Querrey def. (1) Bryan/Bryan 7-5 2-6 10-8
What a wild event for the “other Americans”: Steve Johnson looked set to become the American #2, and that won’t happen — but he shows what he can do by beating the #1 doubles team in the world. The Bryans of course stay at #1, but they remain oddly inconsistent in 2014.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Groth/Paes def. Cabal/Marrero 7-6(7-3) 3-6 12-10
