RAIN FORCES POSTPONEMENT OF MATCHES AT USTA 16S & 18S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Play Will Resume at 8 a.m. (PDT) on Sunday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego

After an exciting start to the United States Tennis Association Girls’ 16s & 18s National Championships, rain suspended play Saturday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center and led to the postponement of more than a dozen Girls’ 16s first round main draw matches.

Tournament officials moved Sunday’s starting time to 8 a.m. (PDT) to accommodate matches which had been postponed.

Sunday’s schedule will also feature the start of the Girls’ 18s main draw. This was the first time rain had suspended play in the 19 years the Girls’ 16s event has been played in San Diego.

A total of 50 Girls’ 16s first-round singles matches were completed Saturday morning. Top-seeded Ryan Peus of Palos Verdes, Calif., led Sarianna Kuuttila of Albuquerque, N.M., 6-4, 5-3, when play was suspended.

Peus reached the singles final of the USTA Girls’ 16s National Clay Court Championships in Virginia last month. She will resume her first-round match on Stadium Court at 8 a.m. (PST) on Sunday.

Local entrant Hannah Zhao of San Diego advanced to the Girls’ 16s second round with a 7-5, 6-1, victory over Tamijean Fumagalli of New Braunfels, Texas.

The USTA Girls’ 16s & 18s National Championships continue through Saturday, Aug. 9.
