One of the best things about watching the galaxy of stars inter-act at the ATP Heritage dinner at the Waldorf Astoria just before the US Open was the degree to which the world No 1’s were in awe of each other.

Fans of Roger Federer with both day and night U.S. Open tickets on Sunday may think they are getting to see the 17-time Grand Slam championship twice. They will, in fact, see Federer once. But the second men's third-round match of the day will feature not Federer, but a man who has molded his playing style after that of the Swiss--Grigor Dimitrov.
Serena seemed to be rather off in this match, but as she so often does, she found a way to come through. With her leading rivals out (see below), she is finally making a push to earn the year-end #1. She leaves Varvara Lepchenko a little above #45.
For the second straight year at the U.S. Open, not a single American man reached the fourth round. The host nation's last hopes, Sam Querrey and John Isner, both bowed out of the tournament during second-round action on Saturday.
By the looks of things, Novak Djokovic's little summer vacation is over, and he's back at work. He leaves Sam Querrey still a little below the Top Fifty -- but at least Querrey seems finally to be going in the right direction.

Next came this awesome match between these two great ladies players. And next thing we know "pokey " the cat dove under the bed. We think the world of Maria's Play and talent and guts and determination. She is a great champion. But she is just too loud. Just saying.
Nick Kyrgios will get top billing in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday night at the U.S. Open. Perhaps CBS officials called for even bigger names during the day, and they got them. Joining Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in third-round action are familiar foes John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Wearing his traditional all-black U.S. Open night outfit, Roger Federer rolled into the third round of the season's final major with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Sam Groth on Friday. Federer out-aced the big-serving Australian nine to eight while prevailing in one hour and 48 minutes.
In the first few games of this, it seemed as if Roger Federer was really struggling to deal with Samuel Groth's serve. True, Federer was having no trouble at all on his own (except for a bad moment in the third set when he was broken) -- but he didn't really seem like Roger Federer. Nonetheless, he keeps alive his faint hopes of rising to #2.
It was a day of firsts for Dominic Thiem; his first five-setter, his first comeback from two sets down, and his first trip to the third round of a Grand Slam. But it could have been so much better.

Has the bottom half of the Open draw been taken over by aliens or something? First Agnieszka Radwanska, now this. Admittedly Simona Halep gives the impression of being primarily a traditional-surface player. But Mirjana Lucic-Baroni has always preferred clay and grass, too -- and she just barely beat Shahar Peer.
