The moment when I first won a tennis match…
I was six years old. I played a tournament very close to my hometown in Canada. It was an under-10 tournament and I ended up winning the whole thing. But I played a girl there, because there were not that many people playing at the time. I beat a girl in either the first or the second round. So that was the first time I won a match. It was actually against a girl.
The moment when I chose tennis over soccer…
I was 12 years old. Up to that point I’d played kind of 50:50 – a lot of tennis and a lot of soccer. I loved playing soccer. I got an elbow to the face and got a black eye and my Dad pretty much said, ‘Enough. No more soccer.’ That was pretty much the last time I played.
The moment when I learnt my first song on the guitar…
Not too long after I started playing the guitar, which was this year in January. I picked up the guitar for the first time and maybe within a week I just started learning a song. It was ‘Stand By Me’ – the cover by John Lennon. It was a pretty easy song. That’s why I chose it!
The moment when I won the Wimbledon doubles title…
It was pretty incredible. We were pretty nervous going into it. We walked through the whole members’ area before the match to get ready and it was pretty special, pretty amazing. I’ve never really experienced anything like it. When we ended up winning it was pretty surreal. To win Wimbledon is like a dream come true. You always wanted to play that tournament when you were a little kid. To be able to do it was something pretty special.
After the match we celebrated instantly. As soon as we got to the locker room the champagne was going all over, spraying everywhere. It was a really nice time with friends and family and we definitely had a nice celebration after the match. Then we went to the famous Wimbledon ball, which was really cool. Had to dress up a little bit, which I’m not used to doing so much. I really, really enjoyed it. Just an incredible week for me. One of the best experiences of my life and the highlight of my career. Hopefully I’ll have more of those. That would be nice!.
