Singles Quarterfinal Play Begins Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

at the USTA Training Center – West at The StubHub Center;

Doubles Semifinals also to be Played Tomorrow

The singles quarterfinals are set at the USTA Player Development Women’s $50,000 Classic in Carson, Calif., at the USTA Training Center – West at The StubHub Center.

Six Americans advanced to the quarterfinals, including US Open Wild Card Challenge leader Julia Boserup, who upset No. 7 seed and former world No. 32 Romina Oprandi of Switzerland; 2009 US Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin; former USC standout Maria Sanchez; and 18-year-old Louisa Chirico, who won after American Madison Brengle retired with an eye infection.

The key match-up of the day was between former Stanford teammates and friends Nicole Gibbs and Kristie Ahn. Both Gibbs and Ahn were members of the Stanford team that won the 2013 NCAA Team Championship. Ahn, who was a finalist at a USTA Pro Circuit event in Carson in 2010, received medical treatment on her left wrist and back throughout the match. In the end, No. 2 seed Gibbs ran away with the match, winning 6-4, 6-3.

“Kristie is one of my best friends in tennis. I have shared more of my tennis history with her than any other player on the tour,” said Gibbs, who also won the NCAA individual singles title for Stanford in 2012 and 2013. “It was a unique type of pressure today, playing one of your best friends. I don’t know if it was the best tennis from either of us, but I did a good job trying to separate on-the-court from off-the court and keep my mind on playing the tennis that I wanted to play. I am feeling great going into the quarters.”

The sixth American advancing to the quarterfinalist was former University of North Carolina standout Sanaz Marand, who upset top seed Olivia Rogowska of Australia, 6-4, 6-4. MICHAELLA KRAJICEK HAD BETTER LUCK AT DOUBLES WITH OLIVIA. THEY BOTH LOST THEIR SINGLES AND THEN TEAMED TOGETHER TO WIN THEIR DUBS. “Misa” LOST A CLOSE ONE TO RISA OZAKI. CONDITIONS WERE A BIT ROUGH WITH A BREEZE THAT WAS COMING AND GOING. IT WAS HARD TO GET TIMING & everyone is fighting so hard for every point. The lead up to the US Open is all about POINTS. Everyone is fighting hard and the level of tension is running HIGH. It’s funny the players on the top of the game are all on beaches and relaxing while these players are all following the daily grind.

Tomorrow’s play begins at 10 a.m., starting with singles and followed by the doubles semifinals. Quarterfinal match-ups include:

No. 2 seed Nicole Gibbs vs. No. 6 seed An Sophie Mestach of Belgium

No. 4 seed Melanie Oudin vs. Julia Boserup

Maria Sanchez vs. Louisa Chirico

Sanaz Marand vs. No. 8 seed Risa Ozaki of Japan

This tournament will be streamed live on www.procircuit.usta.com.

The USTA Pro Circuit event in Carson is taking the place for a women’s tournament in Yakima, Wash., that was faced with a fire in mid-May. The fire destroyed the host site’s clubhouse and impacted some of the adjoining tennis courts.

Carson is the second of three consecutive women’s hard-court tournaments that make up the USTA Pro Circuit’s US Open Wild Card Challenge, which will award a men’s and women’s wild card into the 2014 US Open. The American woman who earns the most WTA ranking points at two of the three USTA Pro Circuit hard-court events in Sacramento, Calif., Carson, and Lexington, Ky., will receive a USTA wild card to compete in the main draw of the US Open, which will be held Sunday, August 25, to Monday, September 8. Only players who did not receive direct entry into the US Open are eligible for the wild cards.
