Men’s tour news from Wednesday in Hamburg and Bogota

by Ricky Dimon

On Tuesday, seeded players went 5-1 at the bet-at-home Open and were one point away from going 6-0. To say the tide turned on Wednesday would be an understatement. Seeds were 0-6 at one point during second-round action and they finished with a 3-7 record (not including Gilles Simon’s walkover past Martin Klizan). Among those bowing out were 2013 finalists Fabio Fognini–the defending champion–and Federico Delbonis. In Bogota, meanwhile, Vasek Pospisil maintained momentum from his Wimbledon doubles title and Bernard Tomic notched a big win over Alejandro Falla.

Hamburg summary

It was another eventful day on the clay courts of Hamburg, where Germany’s own Alexander Zverev , Dustin Brown treated the home crowd to a pair of huge victories. One day after earning the first ATP-level match win of his career, the 17-year-old Zverev upset Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 7-5 to book a surprising spot in the last 16. Brown saved two match points, one with a crushing backhand and the second with a massive serve, before outlasting Fernando Verdasco in a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(8) thriller. Fellow Germans Philipp Kohlschreiber and Tobias Kamke advanced in more comfortable fashion, as Kohlschreiber ousted Gastao Elias 7-5, 6-1 and Kamke upended Delbonis 6-3, 6-4.

“I can’t explain my emotions right now,” Zverev said after the biggest win of his young career. “I don’t know if I am dreaming. I am really happy with the way I am playing and I am really happy to have won against a player who has been in the Top 10. One or two points mattered in both sets. I played some great points at the right moments.”

Bogota summary

Almost every day has been a good day for Canada on the tennis court of late, with Pospisil capturing the Wimbledon men’s doubles title, Milos Raonic reaching the semifinals at the All-England Club, and Genie Bouchard finishing runner-up in the season’s third Grand Slam. The trend continued on Wednesday in Bogota, as Pospisil defeated Alex Kuznetsov 7-5, 7-5 and Peter Polansky edged qualifier Nicolas Barrientos 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Pospisil is joined in the quarterfinals by Tomic, whom he will face on Friday after the Aussie beat Falla 6-1, 7-6(2). Radek Stepanek is also through to the last eight thanks to a 7-6(2), 6-2 dismissal of Guido Pella.
