Michaela Krajicek from the Netherlands had a win over Auzzie Storm Sanders. It was a bagel and a French fry. Poor Storm was under the weather but gave it her best . Our friend Olivia Rogowska is the number one seed and she won her match. First round play was completed today at the USTA Player Development Women’s $50,000 Classic in Carson, Calif., at the USTA Training Center – West at The StubHub Center.
Seven Americans advanced to the second round, including two-time NCAA singles champion for Stanford Nicole Gibbs, who cruised past qualifier Jennifer Elie, 6-1, 6-1, and former USC standout Maria Sanchez, who upset No. 3 seed Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia, in three sets.
Also advancing today was 2009 US Open quarterfinalist and former world No. 31 Melanie Oudin, who dropped the first set in her match against fellow American Tory Kinard, but fought back to win the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. This was Oudin’s first match on a hard court since the spring.
“I definitely was feeling a little rusty today—it was my first match on hard courts in a long time,” said Oudin, whose last hard-court match was in Miami in March. “I needed to feel the ball and she played well in the beginning. Then, I started getting my groove and was able to pull away with it in the end. I am still trying to get my footing and timing together on hard courts, but I am playing well. It is definitely different, but I’m ready.”
Another American winning her first round match today was Julia Boserup, who leads in the 2014 US Open Wild Card Challenge, which grants a US Open wild card to the American player who earns the most WTA ranking points at two of the three USTA Pro Circuit hard-court events in Sacramento, Calif., Carson, and Lexington, Ky. Boserup reached the final in Sacramento last week, earning 48 points for the early lead. Boserup defeated qualifier and former Top 20 player Alexandra Stevenson today, 6-4, 6-2.
Tomorrow’s play begins at 10:00 a.m., starting with singles and followed by doubles. Notable match-ups include:
Oudin vs. fellow American Asia Muhammad
Gibbs vs. tournament wild card and fellow Stanford standout Kristie Ahn
Sanchez vs. former world junior No. 1 Daria Gavrilova of Russia
Boserup vs. No. 7 seed and former world No. 32 Romina Oprandi of Switzerland
This tournament will be streamed live on www.procircuit.usta.com.
The USTA Pro Circuit event in Carson is taking the place for a women’s tournament in Yakima, Wash., that was faced with a fire in mid-May. The fire destroyed the host site’s clubhouse and impacted some of the adjoining tennis courts.
Admission is FREE ( parking too , just say tennis ) and open to the public all week. For additional information about the USTA Player Development Women’s $50,000 Classic, visit www.usta.com/carson.
